Sense8 Christmas Special & Season 2 Get Official Premiere Dates

Sense8 Christmas Special Season 2 Release Dates

Netflix has built up a strong stable of fan loved shows, from revivals like Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life to comic book series like Luke Cage. Along with award winners like Orange is the New Black and House of Cards, Netflix has created some unique shows that keep subscribers around. One of the more divisive shows on Netflix is Sense8, a science fiction series from the minds of the Wachowskis and J. Michael Straczynski.

Sense8 is the story of eight strangers who are mentally and emotionally linked. The show comes from the Wachowskis, most famous for The Matrix series, while J. Michael Straczynski, the creator of Babylon 5, also produces the show. The first season explored many themes often seen in science-fiction, including sexuality, gender, and politics. Now, fans of the first season will be happy to hear about the latest developments.

It was confirmed on the official Sense8 Twitter that the rumored Christmas special will be airing later this month. The two-hour special, officially titled “Sense8: A Christmas Special” will air exclusively on Netflix on December 23rd. Along with the holiday announcement, Sense8 announced the official release date for season 2 of the series.

Our story continues.

A Christmas Special: December 23.

10 new episodes: May 5, 2017.

— Sense8 (@sense8) December 3, 2016

Season 2 of Sense8 will be available globally on May 5, 2017. All 10 episodes will be available beginning at 12:01 AM PT. The first season was released on June 5, 2015, with all 12 episodes available at release.

The first season of Sense8 got mediocre reviews from critics, but viewers who gave the series a chance seemed hooked and had to watch the first 12 episodes as quick as possible. A Netflix report claims 70 percent of viewers who made it through the first three episodes watched the entire first season run. Netflix also claims the show was one of its higher watch-all-at-once binge shows.

The Wachowskis and Straczynski have said this series is a five year story, with five seasons mapped out. As such, the cast is signed for five seasons and as long as Netflix keeps renewing, fans will get to see the vision mapped out by these creative individuals. Straczynski used a similar layout for Babylon 5, where he had five seasons mapped out to even the last episode from the beginning of the series. Netflix picked up the series after years on the shelf; the Wachowskis previously pitched the show to networks including Warner Brothers and HBO.

The Sense8 Christmas special airs on Netflix December 23, 2016. Season 2 of the series also airs on Netflix beginning May 5, 2017.
