Mary Fitzgerald opened up about why she and Romain Bonnet decided to hide the fact that they were already married when Selling Sunset first premiered on Netflix. The show star spoke exclusively with Screen Rant and explained why she doesn't feel like she and Romain hid anything from viewers. They just chose not to 'tell anybody' about their private elopement.

If you watched season one of Selling Sunset, you would believe that Mary and Romain were working out the kinks in their budding romance. By season's end, fans watched as Romain decided to pop the big question, to which Mary of course said "yes." The couple spent most of season two wedding planning and fighting with some of Mary's work friends about their decision to marry so soon despite their 13-year age gap. In the season two finale episode, the couple got married on October 12, 2019, in a lavish Los Angeles estate that was offered by one of Mary’s clients. However, after the season aired, public records revealed that Mary and Romain had been married since March 2018.

While speaking exclusively with Screen Rant, Mary got candid when explaining why she and Romain played along with production and hid the fact that they were already married four months before production for season one began. "We didn't really tell anybody," the LA-based realtor revealed. "It was for personal reasons, and no one knew." When it comes to how the public response has been, Mary doesn't feel like she was ever hiding anything from the viewers. "It wasn't like we were hiding it," she said. "And we were planning our wedding." The two had only been married a few months when the show kicked off. So to Mary and Romain, they saved all the real fun in planning a wedding for the reality show.

"It was for personal reasons, and just to make sure we could have the wedding that we wanted," she continued. "It was very important to him to have a proper wedding for his family, and for his marriage. We wanted them to be there, so we decided to just wait and do a real wedding." To the Netflix stars, "that was our real wedding," Mary shared. "We didn't even really consider ourselves married until we had our wedding." She also considered Romain's feelings about having a small private wedding before filming started. "I wanted to make sure he got that experience too," she shared. "And I'm glad we did; it was a beautiful moment, and we decided to keep it pretty small, just our closest friends and family. And I'm glad we did do that."

In fact, the couple is still in the honeymoon phase as the pandemic halted their plans to jet off on their planned getaway. "Because of travel restrictions we get turned away at the airport," Mary revealed. "They wouldn't let us board the plane. We were going to go to Bali, like I said I wanted." It turns out, the couple was headed to Indonesia just a few hours after the travel restrictions had been put in place in the country. When Mary learned that they had to return home, she was disappointed, to say the least. "I cried all the way home," she admitted. "We just needed it! We just planned it around when the season ended, but then COVID happened. We're still waiting to go, but hopefully, it'll be soon." We hope so too, Mary.
