Ricardo Chavira and Gabriel Chavarria are set to play lead characters in Netflix’s Selena: The Series. Picked up by the streaming service last December, with Christian Serratos in the title role, the show is slowly starting to take shape.

Selena: The Series has been described as the late singer’s coming-of-age tale. Before she was shot and killed by the manager of her fan club in 1995, Selena was a wildly successful and versatile entertainer. In addition to her status as a recording artist, Selena was a songwriter, model, actress and fashion designer. Nicknamed the Tejano Madonna, she ranks as the best-selling female in the history of Latin American music. Her meteoric rise, and tragic end, was chronicled in a well-received biopic starring Jennifer Lopez. For her performance as Selena, Lopez earned a Golden Globe nomination. Though the singer’s story might be familiar, forever cited as an example of the dangers of fame, and eliciting questions about a life ended too soon, the Netflix series will reportedly run for two seasons, which should offer a more patient gaze into the perspective of such a memorable star. This includes some very important figures in Selena’s life.

As reported by Deadline, Chavira and Chavarria will portray members of Selena’s family. Chavira will step into the shoes of Abraham, the singer’s father, who is described as a savvy businessman striving for the American dream. Chavarria will portray A.B. Quintanilla, Selena’s brother, who helped behind the scenes, playing bass guitar, producing and writing songs. Chavira is known for his long-running role as Carlos Solis on Desperate Housewives. Initially regarded as a cluelessly neglectful husband, Solis would become an integral part of the primetime soap opera. Chavarria currently has a lead role on the television adaptation of The Purge.

Moisés Zamora, who has worked on the drama Star, will pen the script. Selena’s family will have an influence on the series, with the artist’s sister and brother serving as executive producers. No other details, related to the episode count or premiere date have been revealed as of yet.

Stories with musicians at the center have proved to be popular. Rocketman and Bohemian Rhapsody are the most popular, immediate examples. There is also the forthcoming I Still Believe, starring KJ Apa, and more high-profile projects about Elvis and David Bowie. With Netflix’s wide reach, and easy accessibility, Selena: The Series has a good chance of standing out from the pack whenever it arrives on the streaming service.
