The Great Serpent in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is a terrifying creature of unimaginable strength. Players will run into this monster a few times during the campaign and can even find a second hidden serpent. Luckily fighting the Serpent is an optional encounter. Players who pursue this fight will earn the Fresh Serpent Viscera key item and unlock the Great Serpent trophy. This is necessary to get an alternative ending to the game.

The Great Serpent is a legendary creature that many fear to go up against. Finding and killing the Great Serpent is a confusing task for many players. There is no straightforward explanation of where the player needs to go within the game. This guide will explain everything players need to do to find and defeat the Great Serpent in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

The Great Serpent in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

The first time players will meet the Great Serpent is during the journey to Ashina Castle. This occurs very early in the game and is a bit of a shock. During this encounter, don’t try to attack the Serpent. There is no amount of damage that can be done to the Serpent at this time. If the Serpent sees you, it has the ability to eliminate the player in one hit.

Players should carefully hug the walls and stay hidden behind pillars wherever possible. There will also be some tall grass to hide in as the snake moves throughout the space. The snake will be looking for you. This point may seem as though there isn’t any moment to be safe. Players should take any free moment they can find to hide in the small shack at the end of the path. The Serpent will eventually look into the shack, in which time the player will be able to perform a blow to its eye for massive damage. There is nothing more that can be done at this point. Players should flee as quickly as possible.

The second encounter takes place in the Sunken Valley following the Gun Fort. The player will need to move through the temple and through the back door. There will be a rope bridge to cross on which the Great Serpent will appear. The Serpent will destroy the bridge and throw the player down into the water. Players will need to repeat their previous tactic of moving when possible and hiding in the designated spots. Don’t forget to rest at the Sculptor’s Idol. This encounter is even easier than the first one. Players should just be careful, and this should be a breeze.

Killing The Great Serpent in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

The final fight will require the player to have the Puppeteer Ninjutsu. This can be obtained from the Folding Screen Monkeys. Players will need to recover this item and then travel to the Senpou Temple. Follow the path to the right and use the Puppeteer Ninjutsu on an enemy nearby. There is a kite mechanism there that this enemy will begin turning to release the kite. This kite can now be used as a grapple point to reach an area that wasn’t available on the first trek through this space. Use the Sculptor’s Idol before heading across a wooden plank. The Serpent will be resting below the player. Plays will need to jump directly down and deliver two quick blows to kill it.
