Ahead of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Game of the Year Edition’s launch next week, developer FromSoftware has shared a trailer showing the new features the free update will bring. Sekiro was a hit with fans of From’s brutal style of action games when it was released last year, but it’s mostly faded from discussion since then, largely due to its lack of multiplayer or DLC.

Previous FromSoftware titles have persisted long after their release thanks to robust expansions and extremely popular multiplayer features. The Dark Souls series still has players going back for multiplayer duels years after the release of the games, and DLC has given both Dark Souls and Bloodborne players reason to replay the single-player experiences as well. FromSoftware intentionally took a step away from its traditional online elements for Sekiro, and to date, there’s no sign that any story DLC is in the works.

However, FromSoftware hasn’t left Sekiro behind completely. On October 28, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Game of the Year Edition will get a simultaneous global release, giving players even more reasons to battle through its tough-as-nails campaign again. FromSoftware has previously detailed the new features to be found in the free update, including unlockable new skins for the player character, the ability to rematch with bosses after defeating them, and a player recording mode that lets anyone save a ghostly image of up to 30 seconds of their own character and upload it for other players to see. FromSoftware’s new trailer offers a look at these new features in action.

While there’s no word on what - if anything - may be next for Sekiro, FromSoftware has revealed its next project. The famed developer is partnering with A Song of Ice and Fire writer George R.R. Martin for the upcoming Elden Ring, which it first revealed at E3 2019. Since then, FromSoftware has been maddeningly quiet about the project, leading to fans of the developer creating elaborate fake lore and even an entire made-up demo for Elden Ring. It’s also led to the half-joking question of whether the involvement of George R.R. Martin, notorious for pushing back the release dates of his books, is slowing the pace of Elden Ring as well.

Whatever comes next for FromSoftware, fans at least know they have something to look forward to very soon. It may not be as satisfying as the story DLC that many have been hoping for, but Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Game of the Year Edition looks like it will give newcomers an enhanced experience the first time around and devotees a reason to take on the game’s challenges one more time.
