Viewers were excited to see what Seeking Sister Wife season 4 would have in store for the Merrifields after season 3 saw the couple’s relationship with potential sister wife, Roberta Rodriguez, take quite a few twists and turns. TLC audiences watched as Garrick divorced his first wife Dannielle Merrifield, whom he had been with for over a decade, so that he could potentially marry Brazilian-born Roberta. However, after the season 4 finale, it appears as if the whirlwind relationship has finally come to an end, with Roberta calling off the relationship via text soon after Garrick and Dannielle returned from visiting her in Brazil, ending the nearly 4-year courtship.
Fans of Seeking Sister Wife were first introduced to Roberta in season 3 of the show, after having met Garrick on a polygamist dating site in 2019. While his first wife, Dannielle, seemed quite reluctant in joining the polygamist lifestyle, Garrick was able to convince her to join him in his journey in finding the perfect sister wife. The Merrifields would soon go to visit Roberta in Mexico, and despite the strong language-barrier, Garrick and Roberta would hit it off immediately. They hit it off so well, in fact, that Garrick sought to divorce Dannielle to marry Roberta so that she could officially live in the United States with their family.
It wasn't long after this that viewers started to see the cracks in this fast-developing relationship. Throughout season 3, fans bare witness to Garrick's manipulation tactics and complete disregard towards his first wife, Danielle, as he continued to explore his new relationship with Roberta. Problems followed the couple, as Garrick planned to pursue a sexual relationship with Roberta before her arrival in the USA, in hopes of getting her pregnant, which Dannielle was not happy about at all. This, on top of Roberta's visa issues, made fans believe that the Merrifields would have a very bumpy road as they continued in their polygamist lifestyle.
However, the couple returned to season 4 of the series and revealed Roberta’s visa had been approved, and they were currently awaiting her arrival in the states. The Merrifields had also been working on their dream home for their polygamist family in preparation for Roberta's arrival. According to InTouch Weekly, the couple purchased the two-acre lot in hopes of turning the land into a two-story, 3,900 square-foot home for their ever-expanding family. It was during this period of time that Garrick decided to seek a second sister wife for the family, which confused and worried Roberta, who had not yet officially been brought into the family. While Roberta was open to adding another wife to their family, she expressed how she would have rather them wait until she had fully settled into her life in the United States.
It was during a visit to Brazil that the Merrifield's relationship would reach it's ultimate breaking point when it was revealed that Garrick shared a kiss with potential sister wife, Lea Newton, while on a date. This revelation absolutely devastated Roberta, who shared her feelings in series of text messages sent to Garrick and Dannielle after they returned to the United States. “It was so humiliating for me, all asking how I was feeling, finding out that Garrick and Lea went beyond just conversation and dinner. After that day, I kept thinking that everything we had that was most beautiful, special and pure has broken a piece and is hurting too much,” one of the messages read.
While Garrick may not be a favorite among Seeking Sister Wife fans, many viewers continue to share their sympathies and support for both Dannielle and Roberta throughout their tumultuous time with the man. It's hard to see where the Merrifields go from here with the polygamist lifestyle, but it is clear that Roberta no longer wants any part in their journey.
