Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist screenwriter Lorene Scafaria makes her writing and directorial debut with another film that (oddly enough) has a very romantic dramedy feel to it: the apocalyptic tale Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. It stars Steve Carrell and Keira Knightley as a pair of neighbors who set on a road trip to reunite Carrell's character with his long-lost high school sweetheart - and Knightley's character with her family - before an asteroid collides with the Earth and wipes out the planet's inhabitants, that is.
The trailer for Seeking a Friend... delivers a nice mix of amusingly awkward comedy and touchingly somber drama, while also offering an early look at the film's noteworthy supporting players - including, Patton Oswalt (Young Adult), Connie Britton (American Horror Story), Gillian Jacobs (Community), and Rob Corddry (Hot Tub Time Machine), among others.

"Indie" can sometimes be synonymous with "excessively quirky" or "annoyingly twee," but Seeking a Friend for the End of the World so far looks to both have an indie feel and strike a nice balance between its comedic and serious elements.
Usually, a world-ending events is (for obvious reasons) the sort of plot device that drives a dramatic story about people seeking reconciliation and redemption before the end of times (a la Last Night, Melancholia, etc.), so Scafaria's more light-hearted approach feels all the more refreshing and innovative by comparison. For similar reasons, it's nice to see that Carrell and Knightley's relationship in the film will be more platonic and almost father-daughter like, rather than forcibly romantic.
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World will arrive in theaters around the U.S. on June 22nd, 2012.
