The Secret Life of Pets Passes $800 Million at the Box Office

The Secret Life of Pets (review)

It has been another good year for animated family films at the box office. Disney kicked off the sub-genre with Zootopia early in the year, followed by Finding Dory in the midst of the summer season. Both animated films are among the highest grossing movies of the year, with both earning over $900 million worldwide. One of the other stand out family flicks of the summer was Illumination and Universal's latest animated film The Secret Life of Pets.

Illumination has had plenty of success in recent years with their animated films, so box office expectations were high. Based on the latest milestone, the studio should be incredibly pleased with how well audiences have received it.

Thanks to another solid weekend, Deadline is reporting that Secret Life of Pets has eclipsed the $800 million mark at the worldwide box office. The estimated total after this weekend puts the movie at $805 million worldwide with $363 million coming from domestic audiences and $442 million from overseas. This is the latest success for the studios and gives them over $4 billion in total earnings since 2010. Outside of Secret Life of Pets, this mark has been hit thanks to the Despicable Me films, Minions, and more.

Even before this milestone was crossed, the studios were already pleased with the box office results and have announced a release date for The Secret Life of Pets 2. The first film currently sits as the sixth highest grossing movie of 2016, and the third highest among animated films. Whether that will stay the case or not remains to be seen, as Disney looks to release Moana later this year and Illumination releasing their second animated film in Sing at the end of the year.

While both of the previous films have the chance to eclipse Secret Life of Pets, there is a sizable gap between cracking the top three animated films and sitting outside that mark. Other animated movies of this year, such as Kung Fu Panda 3 and The Angry Birds Movie, earned over $519.9 million and $346.5 million respectively. Regardless of how well other animated movies of 2016 fair, Secret Life of Pets will certainly end in the top 5 among animated films, and still be one of the higher grossing movies overall. If the sequel can do similar numbers at the box office and get favorable reviews once again, then Illumination and Universal could have another animated franchise to build around.

The Secret Life of Pets is playing in theaters now. The Secret Life of Pets 2 will be released in U.S. theaters on July 13, 2018.
