Max, Duke, Snowball and the rest of the gang are back in the trailer for The Secret Life of Pets 2. The followup to Illumination's 2016 hit was originally set to open in theaters this year, but was pushed back to 2019 after the studio updated its release slate to include Sing 2 in 2020, along with Minions 3. Of course, The Secret Life of Pets sequel has gone through much bigger changes since then - specifically, when it dropped Louis C.K. from its cast last year, after the actor/comedian (who voiced Max in the first movie) confirmed the sexual misconduct allegations levied against him.
Thankfully, updates on The Secret Life of Pets 2 front have been far more positive since then. Patton Oswalt has stepped in to replace C.K. as Max in the movie, with Eric Stonestreet, Kevin Hart, Lake Bell, Dana Carvey, Jenny Slate, Albert Brooks, and Hannibal Buress all reprising their voice roles from the first Secret Life of Pets. The returning actors are joined in the sequel by series newcomers Tiffany Haddish (who's also lending her voice to next year's The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part) and Harrison Ford in his first-ever animated film role.
Illumination is kicking off The Secret Life of Pets 2's marketing with the teaser trailer, which will be attached to the studio's The Grinch in theaters beginning this weekend. Take a look at the teaser in the space below.
This trailer focuses specifically on Max, but with the promise of similar character-focused Secret Life of Pets 2 trailers to come in the near future. Though it doesn't reveal much (if anything) about the film's actual narrative, the trailer nevertheless provides a sneak peek at Oswalt's performance as the ever-anxious Max as he's taken on an unexpected trip to the vet's office by his loving, if also oblivious, owner Katie (Ellie Kemper). Haddish's as yet unnamed character - a dog who appears to be a fresh addition to Max's furry neighbors - also shows up briefly here, towards the end of the trailer.
All things considered, this trailer does a nice job of reminding moviegoers what it was they enjoyed about the first Secret Life of Pets - namely, the funny insights into what their furry companions are thinking (and related gags) - while also hinting at more of that to come in the sequel proper. The original movie was a pretty massive commercial success back in 2016 and grossed $875 million at the worldwide box office, while at the same time earning generally positive reviews from critics. With director Chris Renaud and writer Brian Lynch also back for the second installment, the odds seem in favor of The Secret Life of Pets 2 becoming an equally big hit, in its own right.
The Secret Life of Pets 2 opens in U.S. theaters on June 7, 2019.
