Samuel L. Jackson has confirmed that filming for Marvel's upcoming Secret Invasion is underway. The 72-year-old Hollywood superstar has appeared as SHIELD director Nick Fury since the very first Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Iron Man, in 2008. Since then, Jackson has made 11 separate appearances across the franchise's 25 films, from assembling Earth’s mightiest heroes in The Avengers to befriending Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel. Fury was last seen in the post-credits scene of Spider-Man: Far From Home, where it was revealed that he was secretly in space working with the shape-shifting Skrulls, while Skrull ally Talos masqueraded as the SHIELD agent on Earth.

Jackson will return as Nick Fury in Marvel’s Secret Invasion, an upcoming Disney+ miniseries based on a popular story arc from the comics. Secret Invasion will see Fury and Talos, played again by Ben Mendelsohn, team up against a rogue Skrull threat. It’s believed that SWORD, a more cosmic-based companion to SHIELD, will also have a part to play in the story. SWORD's existence was first hinted at in the Far From Home post-credits scene, and later officially introduced in WandaVision. Secret Invasion was announced by Kevin Feige in December 2020 as part of the Marvel showcase at Disney Investor day, and will be executive produced and co-written by Mr Robot producer Kyle Bradstreet.

Taking to Instagram, Jackson confirmed that filming for Secret Invasion has commenced. The actor posted a picture of himself wearing a Nick Fury themed t-shirt, seemingly on set or nearby the ongoing production of the series. The t-shirt references Fury’s disappearance between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame as part of the half of the population wiped out by Thanos’ snap. Jackson jokes in the caption, “#f*ckthatsnap,”  as well as noting his excitement to be back in the Marvel universe, stating he’s “Happy to be back on the attack!” With the hashtag “#secretinvasion,” Jackson confirms he has started his work on the upcoming Marvel series. Check out his post below:

Jackson is joined in the upcoming show by some brand new MCU stars. Game Of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke is set to join the Marvel universe as a yet unspecified character. As is Oscar-winner and The Crown star Olivia Colman, with both actresses keeping tantalisingly silent about their roles in the show. Kingsley Ben-Adir, who recently played Malcolm X in the Oscar-nominated One Night In Miami, has also been announced as a Marvel newcomer, and he will be playing the series’ main villain.

Fury’s return to action is long-awaited by fans who are eager for an explanation for Spider-Man: Far From Home’s end-credits stinger. Many are keen to find out what preoccupied Nick Fury so much that he had to task shape-shifting alien Talos with impersonating him. Fans of the comics will also be looking forward to huge twists and turns, as the original Secret Invasion storyline saw major revelations that shook up the comic books' narrative for years to come. Viewers should expect the MCU adaptation of Secret Invasion to be just as dramatic, thrilling, and action-packed as its source material when it comes to Disney+ next year.
