Marvel Studios calls Secret Invasion an MCU crossover event. After the Infinity Saga, the MCU expanded on the small screen thanks to the launch of Disney+. After seeing seven series released on the platform in the last year and a half, the franchise will continue rolling out shows on the service with a string of new projects.

One of Marvel Studios' upcoming Disney+ shows is Secret Invasion, which is part of MCU's Phase 5 slate. Fronted by Nick Fury and Talos the Skrull, the show will see the former S.H.I.E.L.D. director deal with the shapeshifting aliens who have been secretly infiltrating Earth for years. While plot details are still scant at the moment, series star Cobie Smulders, who reprises Maria Hill in the project, says that Secret Invasion will be more serious than the usual MCU fare, as it's more of a paranoia thriller.

While Marvel Studios have not revealed that much about its narrative, they do confirm one aspect of the show in a new listing. As posted on Disney+ Originals website, Marvel officially calls Secret Invasion a "crossover event series," which means that it will be bigger than previous MCU shows. It also re-affirms the project's core plotline as Fury and Talos dealing with "a faction of shape-shifting Skrulls." Read the full brief below:

Secret Invasion is a newly announced series heading to Disney+ that stars Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn as the Skrull Talos—characters who first met in “Captain Marvel.” The crossover event series showcases a faction of shape-shifting Skrulls who have been infiltrating Earth for years.

In MCU's Multiverse Saga, the term crossover event has a slightly different meaning. Initially, Avengers films were presumed to fit the bill, as they usually culminate their storytelling Phases. That's no longer the case, however, as they are now going to be Saga-cappers instead, following the impact of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Meanwhile, the typical crossover events will be team-up movies like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. With this new designation for Secret Invasion, Marvel Studios establishes that Disney+ shows can also be crossover events, and are not just for supplemental storytelling. For awhile now, projects on the platform have been mostly origins stories, such as Moon Knight and Ms. Marvel, or side-stories for already established characters, like in WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, and Hawkeye.

Given its new designation as an MCU crossover event, expect Secret Invasion to be bigger in scope than previous Disney+ shows. While other series mostly had self-contained narratives, the upcoming series could very well set the stage for the MCU Multiverse Saga's culmination, something else it shares with the MCU's new team-up films. This means that Secret Invasion will be an important pillar of Marvel Studios' new era of storytelling and shouldn't be missed by fans.
