Marvel Studios hires two directors for the upcoming Secret Invasion Disney+ show. Based on the memorable comic event story by Brian Michael Bendis, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is putting its own spin on Secret Invasion in the near future. The series stars former SHIELD director, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), and the shape-shifting Skrull alien, Talos (Ben Mendelsohn), reuniting the pair who showed tremendous chemistry in Captain Marvel.

The Secret Invasion show was confirmed to be in development at Marvel Studios in 2020 with Mr. Robot's Kyle Bradstreet writing and executive producing it. The series isn't expected to debut on Disney's streaming service until sometime in 2022, but there have been plenty of exciting updates as of late. Emilia Clarke, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Olivia Colman, and others have joined Secret Invasion's cast in recent weeks ahead of the start of production. In order for that to happen, Marvel needs people to direct each episode, and now we know who that will be.

According to THR, Marvel Studios has brought Thomas Bezucha and Ali Selim aboard Secret Invasion as the show's directors. Bezucha most recently directed the Kevin Costner thriller, Let Him Go, while Selim has directed multiple episodes of CondorManhunt, and The Looming Tower in recent years. It is not known how many episodes they will each direct, but sources say it could be an even three-to-three split or a four-to-two divide. Filming is scheduled to begin in Europe later this year.

Through the hiring of Bezucha and Selim, Marvel's interest in ramping up the thriller aspect of Secret Invasion is clear. The comic storyline is built on deceit, betrayals, and surprises, so making the Disney+ show more of a thriller makes sense. It could allow the show to veer closer to the tone of Captain America: The Winter Soldier but with some sci-fi elements mixed in. Based on Bezucha and Selim's filmographies, they should be able to deliver the MCU sci-fi thriller that Marvel appears to be building.

Marvel might be able to make the show mirror the thriller genre of its comic book roots, but Secret Invasion is already set up to be very different. There is plenty of speculation that the Skrulls won't be the villains of the story as they were on the page, but Marvel could ultimately surprise viewers by doing exactly that. Meanwhile, the Secret Invasion comics feature countless superheroes, and the MCU is scaling down the cast of characters for Disney+. There should still be a few other MCU characters who appear alongside Fury and Talos, though. Hopefully, Bezucha and Selim have no trouble balancing a potentially large ensemble.
