Cobie Smulders is set to reprise her role as Maria Hill for the Marvel event series Secret Invasion. Smulders first appeared as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Maria Hill in 2012's The Avengers, acting as the right-hand to Samuel L. Jackson's S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury. Hill appeared in multiple MCU projects since that time, including Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and most recently in Spider-Man: Far From Home. Smulders also appeared in numerous episodes of the spinoff show, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Secret Invasion is a continuation of the storylines set up in Captain Marvel with the alien group known as The Skrulls, who have been infiltrating Earth for years. The crossover event series also stars Ben Mendelsohn, again playing the Skrull Talos, Olivia Colman, Emilia Clarke, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Christopher McDonald, and Killian Scott. Mr. Robot's Kyle Bradstreet is the showrunner for the event series, with Thomas Bezucha and Ali Selim serving as directors on the six-part event series.

Now comes word via Deadline that Smulders is set to reprise her role as Maria Hill for Secret Invasion, once again joining Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury to team up against a new threat. Story details are being kept under wraps, but the set-up has been evolving from Captain Marvel to Spider-Man: Far From Home thus far. Recently, during Disney+ day, the first look at an older, bearded Nick Fury was revealed for Secret Invasion, which is the only footage tease that's been released to date.

Spider-Man Far From Home Nick Fury Maria Hill

Before taking on the role of Maria Hill, Smulders was best known for her part as Robin Scherbatsky in How I Met Your Mother. Since becoming an MCU staple, Smulders has taken on several notable roles, including a team-up with Tom Cruise in Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, as Mother in Netflix's A Series Of Unfortunate Events, and a co-starring role in Netflix's Friends From College series. Her Stumptown TV show was abruptly canceled, even after being renewed for a second season. Her most recent work was as Ann Coulter in American Crime Story: Impeachment.

Maria Hill has been a great supporting character in Marvel Comics for decades, and Smulders nailed her persona and attributes exceptionally since The Avengers. While Hill has mostly played a background role in the films (and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. series), she's been a strong presence when she shows up, as well as a fan favorite. Hopefully, Secret Invasion will find her more involved in not only the background, but the action, as Smulders has proven to be not only adept at pithy comebacks but swift and decisive measures when called for.
