Secret Invasion continues to build up excitement for its impending debut, with one returning character seemingly confirmed for the upcoming Disney+ series whose presence could portend the arrival of yet another superhero team in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The series, which is set for a Spring premiere date, has been the subject of several rumors concerning which surprise characters may return therein and, while few of these suggestions have been confirmed by Marvel Studios, the upcoming event has become one of the most exciting titles in Phase 5. At long last, however, one of the more persistent rumors regarding Secret Invasion appears to be confirmed, suggesting one major storyline therein.

Secret Invasion is 2023's most important Marvel show, depicting Samuel L. Jackson's Colonel Nick Fury as he discovers a clandestine alien invasion that has been taking place under humanity's nose for decades. The series adapts the iconic 2008 comic storyline of the same name, which reveals that a legion of shapeshifting Skrulls has been secretly replacing key humans in an effort to take over Earth. The series is expected to reveal that several prominent MCU characters, perhaps even including some Avengers, have actually been Skrulls in disguise. As a result, the upcoming Disney+ project threatens to change everything viewers think they know about the Marvel Cinematic Universe forever.

Quake's MCU Return Hints At The Secret Warriors In The MCU

Agents of SHIELD Season 7 Chloe Bennet Daisy Johnson Quake

Recent events suggesting that Chloe Bennet's Quake may join Secret Invasion hints at the debut of the Secret Warriors in the MCU. While Quake's return risks breaking MCU canon, the fan-favorite Agents of SHIELD character has been the subject of many rumors and theories that suggested she might have a role in Secret Invasion. The actress appears to have finally confirmed these theories on her Twitter account, slyly implying that she may be featured in one of Marvel's upcoming projects. While Bennet didn't mention Secret Invasion by name, her character Quake has far too important a role in the comic book storyline to be left out of the MCU's interpretation.

In the Secret Invasion comics event, Nick Fury brings together a new team to combat the Skrulls, forming the first iteration of the Secret Warriors. While Marvel hasn't revealed much about Secret Invasion's story, news of Bennet's return certainly seems to fall in line with the set-up for the team in the series, especially given that Quake was one of the Secret Warriors' most prominent members. The Inhuman superhero goes on to lead future iterations of the team, making Quake's name synonymous with that of the Secret Warriors. If Bennet does indeed return as Daisy Johnson in Secret Invasion, her presence all but confirms the arrival of the Secret Warriors.

The MCU's Many New Teams Explained

With the arrival of the Secret Warriors, it appears as though the MCU is deliberately setting up multiple new superhero teams in the Multiverse Saga. In addition to introducing an even more powerful Avengers team, the franchise is set to introduce plenty of iconic comic book groups in the near future. The Thunderbolts, a group of antiheroes and former villains, is set to debut in their own self-titled film in 2024, while other teams like The Fantastic Four are confirmed to make their debut by the beginning of Phase 6. Even more exciting, Marvel's version of the X-Men is also set to show up in the franchise's very near future.

Furthermore, in addition to the many teams that will show up in Phases 5 and 6 of the MCU, several others are heavily rumored to make their debut before the end of the Multiverse Saga. The Young Avengers are rumored to join the MCU very soon, with some rumors suggesting that the team could be teased as early as Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Additionally, Marvel's paranormal team of superheroes, the Midnight Sons, also appears to be in its beginning stages in the MCU, as heroes like Blade, Moon Knight, Man-Thing, Werewolf by Night, Elsa Bloodstone, and Black Knight all make their debut in suspicious concert with one another.

Marvel may have a very good reason for its shift to focus on teams rather than individual heroes in the near future. As the franchise continues to grow, it may be easier to focus on groups with more specific team-ups. Replacing Avengers crossovers with more powerful teams of MCU characters like the Illuminati makes it easier to sort characters into specific groups that better fit their skill sets. This also ensures that certain characters won't be left by the wayside in massive crossovers bloated with too many characters. The MCU could continue to add new characters without fear of the franchise getting too large, splitting up into various sub-franchises instead.

Who Might Be On Nick Fury's Secret Warriors Team?

If Nick Fury does indeed gather a Secret Warriors team to combat the Skrull invasion, it will doubtlessly be filled with several key characters both new and old. Fury himself seems poised to become the team leader, with his trusty associate Maria Hill backing him up, finally giving the beloved MCU character a key role in Secret Invasion. Furthermore, the trailer for the series reveals that pre-existing MCU characters like James Rhodes, a.k.a. War Machine, and Talos will also appear, hinting that they too could be counted as members of the Secret Warriors, though, each of these characters is also high on the list of potential traitors to Fury's cause.

The return of Daisy Johnson, a.k.a. Quake, suggests that she will play a key role in Fury's Secret Warriors team, but may also reveal that other characters from Agents of SHIELD will return to join their companion in the fight against the Skrulls. While not always seen as canon, Agents of SHIELD does connect to the MCU and could easily be reinstated as part of the larger franchise, paving the way for key characters like Phil Coulson, Melinda May, Deathlok, Yo-Yo and even the Ghost Rider to appear in Secret Invasion. Bobbi Morse's Mockingbird is also a strong contender, especially given her character's importance to the 2008 comic book event.

Secret Invasion may even elect to include certain members of the original Secret Warriors lineup in the comics, most of whom have not yet been introduced in the MCU. The forming of this clandestine team could portend the debut of heroes like Stonewall, Manifold, Phobos, Hellfire, and the Druid, adding to the ever-growing ranks of MCU characters. As Secret Invasion rewrites a Skrull-filled MCU, several members of the team may even be revealed as imposters themselves, heightening the tension in this high-stakes thriller. Ultimately, the Secret Warriors and the powerful heroes therein may be Nick Fury's only chance of saving Earth from the invading alien army in Secret Invasion.
