Nick Fury can't trust anyone in his new Disney+ series, Secret Invasion, perhaps even including his old Skrull companion Talos. The shape-shifting Skrull Empire has officially begun its invasion of the planet Earth in the upcoming streaming series, using their uncanny abilities to take the form of key humans — perhaps even including certain Avengers. As Nick Fury discovers this clandestine invasion of his planet, his already small list of allies will continue to grow shorter and shorter, especially when it comes to those who are a member of the invading species, regardless of whether they have helped him in the past or not.

Secret Invasion will reveal key MCU characters to have been Skrulls all along, but this is hardly the first encounter that humans have had with the shape-shifting alien species. Nick Fury first encountered a group of renegade Skrulls led by Talos in the mid-90s, during the events of Captain Marvel. Since then, he appears to have kept contact with Talos, with the Skrull even filling in for Fury when he went off-world, as seen in Spider-Man: Far From Home. Fury and Talos appear to have been in league with one another for decades, but Secret Invasion will test the mettle of their alliance when the Skrull armada attacks.

Talos's Skrull Connections Make Him Hard To Trust In Secret Invasion

Talos and Marvel Secret Invasion

In the upcoming Disney+ series, it appears as though S.W.O.R.D., Phase 5's replacement for S.H.I.E.L.D. will be primarily dealing with the Skrull Invasion, with Nick Fury, Maria Hill, and Talos apparently functioning as the primary defense against the covert alien operation. However, Fury and his compatriots might have a difficult time trusting Talos, given the fact that he himself is a Skrull. There would be little reason for Ben Mendelsohn's alien shape-shifter to side with humanity rather than with his own people, especially after years of being a refugee without a home planet. It wouldn't be far-fetched to believe that Talos may choose the Skrulls over Earth.

Marvel Studios has revealed very few details about Secret Invasion thus far, save for a single trailer which depicts certain story beats that will play out over the course of the series. In one of the trailer's most interesting shots, Talos appears to be menaced by another member of the Skrull army, implying that he is not aligned with them at the show's beginning. However, should the Skrulls find out that one of their own has a high-ranking position in S.W.O.R.D., they would want to take advantage of this opportunity by converting Talos back to their side. Whether he accepts may be a crucial element of the series.

Talos May Have Been The First Phase Of The Skrull Secret Invasion

Marvel has been hinting at the Skrull invasion of Earth for years now, but most notably in Captain Marvel, which also happens to be Talos' MCU debut. Talos and his family end the film as allies of Carol Danvers and Nick Fury, supposedly going off to look for a new homeworld by the time the credits roll. However, Talos' true mission may have been far darker, acting as the first phase of the secret invasion. After all, one of his first acts after arriving on Earth was impersonating the current director of S.H.I.E.L.D., signaling that his motives included more than just finding Carol Danvers.

Talos proved just how easy it would be to fool humanity, stealing all their secrets as the fake director of S.H.I.E.L.D. Even if Talos has spent the last few decades as an ally of Nick Fury, Secret Invasion is sure to include multiple retcons to the MCU, including certain characters' allegiances. It wouldn't be at all surprising to learn that Talos had secretly been helping his companions infiltrate Earth in hopes of taking over the planet, and his treachery may come to light as Nick Fury discovers more and more about this operation. When the events of Secret Invasion come to pass, Talos is the last person Fury should trust.
