The trailer for the 2023 lineup for Disney+ has given another brief look at Secret Invasion, and one scene shows how the series will continue a storyline from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Although Secret Invasion is scheduled to be the next MCU series released on Disney+, there are still a lot of questions up in the air regarding exactly what will take place over the series undoubtedly tense storyline. While Secret Invasion will most likely focus on the story of Nick Fury, the recent tease has proven that it will also continue one of Wakanda Forever's biggest loose ends.

Secret Invasion, adapted from the comic storyline of the same name, will follow characters like Nick Fury, Maria Hill, and Everett Ross as they uncover a vast conspiracy involving some of the MCU's biggest characters being replaced by Skrulls. There are loads of possibilities as to who could have been replaced by the shape-shifting aliens, meaning that the series will have ripple effects all throughout the MCU. While Secret Invasion will mostly continue the Skrull storyline from Captain Marvel, another MCU project that will heavily influence the series is Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Why Everett Ross Will Be On The Run In Secret Invasion

Everett Ross in Secret Invasion

The Disney+ Secret Invasion teaser showed a brief glimpse of former CIA agent Everett K. Ross, played by Martin Freeman. The teaser shows Ross walking down an alley in inconspicuous clothing before quickly hiding behind a wall as a large light barely misses him. Although not much context is given, this implies that Everett Ross will be on the run in Secret Invasion, which makes sense considering where Ross was at the end of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

In Wakanda Forever, Agent Ross was arrested by the CIA for assisting the Wakandans in their attempt to protect Riri Williams from Namor. However, Ross is freed by Okoye at the end of the film, meaning that he is on the lam. Ross will presumably have to evade the CIA in Secret Invasion, but the reason that this story is being told in Secret Invasion of all places is currently unknown. Considering Ross has heavy ties to the CIA, it's possible that he discovered something about the Skrulls and is attempting to get that info to Nick Fury while still on the run as a wanted fugitive.

Could Everett Ross Be A Skrull?

A more interesting explanation for Everett Ross' actions in the Secret Invasion trailer is that he has actually been replaced by a Skrull. Presumably, Marvel would want the Skrull replacement twists in the MCU to be big enough that it's significant, but not big enough that it majorly impacts any of the main heroes. Everett Ross is a character that has been in several MCU projects, but he isn't major enough that any audiences are really attached to him, meaning that he would be a perfect candidate to be replaced by a Skrull.

Everett Ross being a Skrull would change the meaning of the Disney+ Secret Invasion tease in two ways. It could be that Ross in that shot is currently a Skrull, on the run from Nick Fury. It could also mean that this Everett Ross is the real one, having escaped the containment facility that the Skrulls put the original characters in. Although it seems more likely that Everett Ross is still hiding from the CIA based on the unanswered elements in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, in a show like Secret Invasion, Ross being a Skrull is entirely possible.
