Set photos from Secret Invasion could debunk the biggest theory regarding the identity of Emilia Clarke's character. The former Game of Thrones star is one of the many secretive new additions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe set to debut in Secret Invasion when the show premieres in late 2022. The Disney+ series marks the returns of Nick Fury, Talos, and Maria Hill, but there are also undisclosed characters played by Olivia Colman, Kingsley Ben-Adir, and Emilia Clarke.

From the moment Clarke's Secret Invasion casting was reported, there has been great speculation as to which Marvel character she could be. Theories range from future Avenger Spider-Woman to the Skrull queen Veranke. However, Abigail Brand was another suggestion that quickly became the favorite among many MCU fans. Abigail Brand is a former SHIELD agent who becomes the head of SWORD in the comics. With WandaVision introducing SWORD and setting up Secret Invasion with a Skrull appearing in the post-credits, hopes of Brand debuting in the show grew. It didn't take long for Emilia Clarke to become the odds-on favorite to play her as a result.

Thanks to recent Secret Invasion set photos, the theory that Emilia Clarke plays Abigail Brand might be debunked. Behind-the-scenes looks at the Disney+ series have been difficult to come by during production, but the first look at Clarke on set could be quite revealing based on what is not included. The photos show Emilia Clarke essentially looking like her regular self in real life. That's a big deal for the Secret Invasion Abigail Brand hopes, as the character's signature green hair from the comics is not included. The MCU wouldn't shy away from including this part of comic book accuracy for Brand, and Clarke is no stranger to wearing standout wigs after the white hair she had for Game of Thrones. As a result, the absence of Abigail Brand's green hair in these photos could be a sign that Emilia Clarke's Secret Invasion character isn't SWORD's leader after all.

There are several possible explanations for Emilia Clarke's Secret Invasion look that still allow her to be Abigail Brand, though. Since this is a spy show, it wouldn't be surprising if Brand had to go undercover, and covering her green hair with a wig or dying it a different color would be the first step in concealing her identity. It's also possible that the MCU's Abigail Brand won't' have green hair until the end of Secret Invasion. Either option or other explanation gives Marvel a chance to possibly preserve the reveal that Emilia Clarke is Abigail Brand, especially while filming takes place in public locations.

If Secret Invasion's set photos do ultimately debunk the Abigail Brand casting, it re-opens the discussion about who Emilia Clarke's MCU character is. It's expected that she'll play someone who will be a major character in the MCU for years to come, but the character also needs to be tied to Secret Invasion's storyline in some fashion. Jessica Drew's Spider-Woman makes the most sense in that regard, although the MCU could also drop a surprise Fantastic Four or X-Men character in the show played by Clarke.
