Sebastian Stan has likened the Winter Soldier to that of Jon Snow in Avengers: Infinity War. Anthony and Joe Russo's upcoming team-up movie is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated movies in the modern cinema, especially since it finally pits Earth's mightiest heroes against the Mad Titan Thanos, a fight that has been teased ever since Joss Whedon's The Avengers hit theaters in 2012.
In addition to uniting the Avengers once again, the film brings the Guardians of the Galaxy into the fold -- a meeting that will be set up in Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok -- as well as induct new members into the Earth-defending team, such as Black Panther, Spider-Man, and the Winter Soldier, whose current whereabouts in Wakanda are being kept secret from virtually everyone else. Given that he doesn't have any superpowers, and he's a bit of an outsider when it comes to fighting crime, the Winter Soldier doesn't exactly fit in with the rest of the heroes.
Sebastian Stan has been busy promoting his latest film, I, Tonya, at the Toronto International Film Festival this week, and the topic of Avengers: Infinity War came up in an interview with MTV News. The actor likened his character, Bucky Barnes, aka the Winter Soldier, to that of Jon Snow from HBO's fantasy drama Game of Thrones, feeling that he's in over his head.
"It certainly is the biggest culmination of anything and everything they've done so far. It's just going to be bigger and crazier than anything. I feel a lot like that Jon Snow character [in] Battle of the Bastards. When there's that shot of Jon Snow, from the back as horses are charging at him and he's just standing there, that's kind of how I feel on set at times. Will I make this stampede or not?"
Judging by the actor's comments, it doesn't sound like the Winter Soldier will become the person that unites all the superheroes against Thanos, as Jon Snow was the one person that attempted (and mostly succeeded) in uniting the various factions against the White Walkers and their army of the dead. Rather, Stan feels that the Winter Soldier will be pitted against overwhelming odds, hence his feeling of being the lone soldier on the battlefield facing down a charging horde. Given that this will be the character's first bout with supernatural forces (at least in the MCU), his reaction seems justified.
Although there is still quite a bit we don't know about the highly-anticipated team-up movie, thanks to footage screened at D23 and San Diego Comic-Con over the summer, we know that Bucky fights alongside Black Panther in Infinity War. However, despite his newfound alliance with Wakanda, Stan says that Bucky is still "figuring out where he's at" in the film, so that may contribute to him feeling overwhelmed. After all, he hasn't exactly had many allies over the years.
