With its moody setting, beautiful costumes, and arresting performance by a star-studded cast, Penny Dreadful was a dazzling series that had something for everyone. Viewers were sucked into the fog-drenched world of Victorian London, where a group of demon hunters crossed paths with famous figures from literature as they stalked their supernatural prey.

Over its eight-episode first season, the series packed in a lot of sensational entertainment, and it was well-respected for its ability to blend original content with the well-known fictional narratives of people like Dorian Gray and Frankenstein's Monster. It offered compelling origin stories for not only these horror icons, but for new characters who proved just as intriguing. Its debut season packed in a lot of excitement, danger, and thrills, so here's a look back at everything fans might have forgotten about.

SIR MALCOLM MURRAY KILLED HIS OWN DAUGHTER

Sir Malcolm Murray was so desperate to find his daughter Mina that he'd do whatever it took to get her back, including enlisting the help of clairvoyant Miss Vanessa Ives, whom he held responsible for Mina's predicament.

His resentment caused him to reveal to Vanessa that he would have no trouble sacrificing her life for Mina's if the opportunity arose, when the time came to track Mina to her den of vampires in a theater, he dispatched her despite her cry of, "I'm your daughter!". He made it clear by saving Vanessa's life that he had chosen his family.

FRANKENSTEIN'S SECOND MONSTER WAS KILLED BY HIS FIRST

After being horrified by the creation of Caliban, Victor Frankenstein's first monster cobbled together by various pieces of decomposing flesh, he created a second more innocent creature named Proteus.

Caliban didn't want a replacement, he wanted Frankenstein to build him a mate. The doctor eventually relented, but only after Caliban promised to leave him alone forever and take his mate with him.

VANESSA GOT POSSESSED

Vanessa Ives already possessed a curious talent for divining the future and sensing danger, but her oracular faculties were preyed upon in Season 1 for the twisted amusement of others.

Dorian Gray brought her to a seance hosted by the mysterious Madame Kali, one in which Vanessa became the star attraction. She was possessed to such a degree that she nearly lost her grip on reality, but not enough to recognize when Dorian had exposed himself as the sociopathic viper she suspected him to be.

VANESSA'S POWERS WERE EXPLAINED

It was important for Season 1 to present plenty of exposition for its characters, but it do so with the engaging use of flashbacks rather than lengthy soliloquies. The relationship between the Ives and Murray families is explained through the close friendship between Mina and Vanessa.

Vanessa was able to trace the awakening of her clairvoyance to dark instances in her childhood, such as finding out that Sir Malcolm had an affair with her mother. It inspired her to seduce Mina's fiance, bringing the families to an impasse, on the other side of which was Vanessa being sent to an asylum.

SIR MALCOLM CONSULTED ON THE RIPPER CASE

Season 1 was full of literary icons from horror classics, as well as a few historical figures. The most prominent of these was Jack the Ripper, whom Sir Malcolm is shown to be investigating early on in the season.

Sir Malcolm believes that the constabulary shouldn't be looking for a man but a "beast", and he has a sneaking suspicion that the sort of beast they should be looking for drains the blood of his victims.

VICTOR KILLED BRONA

When Caliban came to Victor crying out for help and threatening him bodily harm in his madness, the doctor relented to do anything that would make the creature relent. He vowed to build him a mate so that he would have someone who understood what it was like to be him in a cruel world.

In order to accomplish this, Victor had to find a victim. Initially there was an actress he selected, but in the end he chose Ethan's lover Brona. Though she was already dying of consumption, Victor stole her last pressure moments of life by smothering her with a pillow.

DORIAN SEDUCED ETHAN

As an immortal, Dorian's tastes tended towards the hedonistic. He had already seen so much of life despite looking ethereally young that he engaged in any vice that aroused his stimulation, from gambling, to drinking, to seducing.

Though he tended to favor female companions like Vanessa and Brona, his appetites knew no restrictions. He managed to seduce Ethan Chandler after he had been dumped by Brona, taking advantage of the American being overcome with grief (and partial to glasses of absinthe).

VAN HELSING WAS MURDERED

Penny Dreadful included many literary figures in its first season, and with all the supernatural threats running about, it made sense that one of them was Professor Van Helsing from Bram Stoker's Dracula.

He was retained to help Dr. Frankenstein study pathogens in vampire blood, but just as he was making headway with his assignment he was killed by Frankenstein's Monster, Caliban.

VANESSA REJECTED DORIAN

Eternally handsome, wealthy, and charming, Dorian Gray was quite the catch of the series, and he had eyes for Miss Ives. Unfortunately, after her terrifying experience at the seance he took her to, she pulled away from his advances.

In the Season 1 finale she rejected him outright, citing that his influence brought out a side of her that she preferred to keep concealed. He was so used to getting what he wanted, he had a difficult time processing his new feelings.

ETHAN REVEALED HIS TRUE SELF

American sharpshooter Ethan Chandler was both horrified and intrigued by the supernatural events he witnessed while retained by Sir Malcolm Murray and Vanessa Ives, perhaps because he had a dark secret of his own.

Throughout Season 1 there were hints about his true nature, but when his father sent two bounty hunters to bring him back to the United States, the full moon revealed it to them. He transformed into the Wolfman and made them sorry they ever went after him.
