The good news, all of these objectives can be completed along the first play-through of each Tall Tale. Each of the Commendations. The Commendations all list directions for what needs to be completed, but the journals are hidden and sometimes divided into separate quests per Tall Tale.

The first Tall Tale, A Pirate's Life, contains a total of 10 journals to find, divided into two sets of five. All ten are found in Sailor's Grave before placing the Cursed Captain's skull on his original body. Finding all five of the Cursed Captain’s journals will unlock the Tales of the Damned Commendation, and all five of Captain Kate Capsize’s journals will unlock The Crew of the Headless Monkey Commendation.

The second Tall Tale, The Sunken Pearl, has five different journals to find. Two of the journals are inside the Spire, and three are inside the Citadel. None are outside of these locations, or on the Black Pearl itself. Finding all five of the Cursed Captain’s journals will unlock the Pieces of Silver Commendation.

The fourth Tall Tale, Dark Brethren, contains ten journals. All 10 are found in the Coral Fortress. They are all part of the Lost at Sea set, but the journals' authors are First Mate Yenay and an unknown author. Finding all ten of the Lost at Sea journals will unlock the Lost at Sea Commendation.

The fifth Tale Tale, Lords of the Sea, contains 10 journals, divided into two locations. All journals of the first set will be found in the spire after the first ship battle. The final set can all be located on the Black Pearl. Finding all five of the Forsaken Pirates journals will unlock the Journals of Forsaken Souls Commendation, and all five of Jack’s Journals will unlock the Journals of the Black Pearl Commendation. Once these Commendations and all others are completed, and players finish all five Tall Tales including the side quests, the Yo, Ho! (A Pirate’s Life for Me) Shanty will finally be unlocked.
