Sea of Thieves' newest season has made landfall, bringing with it the standard seasonal content and an update with exciting new changes. Rare and Microsoft Studios' lighthearted multiplayer pirate adventure game introduced a seasonal model back in early 2021, and is now entering into Season Seven. Seasons have helped to keep the game afloat, providing dedicated players with regular content updates and more reliable expectations while bringing new players in with compelling features. Overall, the game feels far more alive than it did in the first few years following its release, and is only continuing to improve over time.

Previous seasons have added limited time events, narrative adventures, and a boatload of challenges, cosmetic items, and additions to the game's map. Challenging locations and new types of treasure have provided new ways to play and put twists on old ones. Now, despite Sea of Thieves' Season Seven launch delay, it's finally here, and it looks to bring all of this and more. Players have lots to look forward to, including features that let them live out their pirate captain fantasies.

Starting in Season Seven, players can captain their own ships, bringing greater control and customization to their swashbuckling adventures. New progression systems reward specialized playstyles, and newcomers to Outposts serve as points of contact to ease a captain's life. And, of course, a new limited-time adventure is on the horizon. Sea of Thieves has given players plenty to dive into in the coming months.

Season Seven & Captaincy Bring Changes To Sea Of Thieves

A Pirate ship heads out to sea in Sea of Thieves

The biggest change in this update is a set of systems around captaincy. Now, players can finally purchase their own ships, bequeath names upon them, and maintain cosmetic changes between sessions. To do this, captains will need to speak with a shipwright, newly introduced to Outposts. With their assistance, players can use their unlocked Sea of Thieves ship cosmetics to personalize their vessels and reflect their particular style, past adventures, or fearsome reputation - and everything will stay exactly as intended when they next go sailing. Shipwrights are also used to repair damage to ships when they return to Outposts, and can deliver premium supplies to the barrels of a captained ship.

This update also brings a new progression system. Milestones for ships and captains provide tracks for specializing in different aspects of the game, like treasure hunting, combat, and fishing. These milestones give players even more control over their experience, incentivizing specific activities with unique rewards. Outposts are getting another visitor - Sovereigns. They provide an incredibly convenient location to unload almost any treasure and make use of various services.

Naturally, Season Seven also introduces more expected content. A new Plunder Pass full of cosmetics unlockable via Renown is available, and the Pirate Emporium also has new items on offer. Adventures in Sea of Thieves are a newer addition, and the next one, titled A Hunter's Cry, will be available later in the season. According to Rare (by way of the Xbox website), this adventure "sends pirates on a risky rescue mission into hostile waters" to save the captured hunter Merrick, who players will know from Stephen's Spoils and previous adventures. Further details aren't yet available, but based on last season's story, the rescue in question likely involves venturing into the Sea of the Damned to return Merrick from the clutches of the Dark Brethren. Players can expect to learn more on August 18 when the adventure begins. Overall, it seems Season Seven brought significant changes to the game while continuing to move forward with what works. The continuation of an ongoing narrative is a fantastic improvement from Sea of Thieves' older storytelling, and the ability to captain ships lets players write their own stories.
