Xbox's E3 presentation brought Sea of Thieves fans a pleasant surprise in the form of a Pirates of the Caribbean crossover for the game's next season, Sea of Thieves: A Pirate's Life. Players will be able to sail alongside characters from Disney's hit film series as the world of Sea of Thieves is changed forever. While the E3 presentation failed to deliver many details about the upcoming expansion, Rare, the developers of Sea of Thieves, recently held a showcase livestream to show some of the gameplay featured in A Pirate's Life and reveal more about the contents of the season.

The Sea of Thieves: A Pirate's Life showcase livestream highlighted the course of the newest season's development, delving into the soundtrack, activities, enemy types, world events, and overall collaboration with Disney for the expansion. Several developers for A Pirate's Life (including Joe Neate, Mike Chapman, Ine T'Sjoen) emphasized the dedication put forth by Rare to capture the essence of Pirates of the Caribbean while still maintaining the freedom of Sea of Thieves. The upcoming season promises to cater to new and returning players alike, while working to solve some bigger irritations with the game's Tall Tales.

Sea of Thieves: A Pirate's Life is comprised of five new Tall Tales for players to experience, however they come with a much-desired twist. Instead of being vulnerable to other pirates sailing the high seas, A Pirate's Life will introduce separate instances for each crew going through the stories. The season will focus on the fallout of Jack Sparrow's theft of the Golden Key, which is the artifact that allowed the Pirates of the Caribbean characters to cross over into Sea of Thieves. Unfortunately, Jack Sparrow didn't cross over alone, with Davy Jones and his crew aboard the Flying Dutchman pursuing him into the Sea of Thieves. Enraged by the lack of consequences, and his lack of influence in Sea of Thieves, Davy Jones seeks a way to gain control over this deathless world.

Sea of Thieves: A Pirate's Life Makes The Ocean More Dangerous

New locations, enemies, and world events will appear throughout various activities in A Pirate's Life. The season introduces a new location known as the Sea of the Damned, which will act as a separate instance for crews to enjoy without the threat of other players sinking their vessels. As players sail the Sea of the Damned, they might encounter Sirens or Ocean Crawlers, which are two of the new enemy types within the game. Sirens are hostile mermaids which will attack players while they are swimming in the ocean. Unlike the mermaids usually encountered in Sea of Thieves, the only ship that these aquatic creatures will return players to is the Ferry of the Damned. Additionally, players will encounter Ocean Crawlers, which are crustacean-humanoid creatures that will pursue pirates across the waves and board their ships. Davy Jones' inclusion in a Pirates of the Caribbean crossover and role as an antagonist in the story plants him in the center of the expansion, making the Flying Dutchman and its crew act as the newest danger to players in Sea of Thieves.

Sea of Thieves balances risk and reward, meaning that conquering the new challenges in A Pirate's Life will be well worth it. Playing in the Sea of the Damned will occasionally reward players with the opportunity to use the Trident of Dark Tides. This weapon fires powerful blasts of energy at opponents, and is seen decimating an Ocean Crawler in the trailer. Additionally, players will be able to obtain the Prison Dog as a pet, who is a trademark in the Pirates of the Caribbean films and ride at Disney. Perhaps the most appealing reward for players to earn in A Pirate's Life is the ability to unlock Jack Sparrow's outfit.

While a Pirates of the Caribbean crossover with Sea of Thieves was likely not the season players were expecting, A Pirate's Life works to incorporate plenty of new content for players. With new enemies, Tall Tales, and loot to earn, Sea of Thieves players will be in for an exciting season of sailing. Sea of Thieves: A Pirate's Life releases June 22nd, with its content available to all players that have completed the game's tutorial.
