Sea of Thieves could one day feature a Battle Royale mode. The open-ended world of sea fairing pirates already allows for co-op and PVP combat, making the game prime for some last player standing content. As game developer Rare (Perfect Dark, Banjo-Kazooie) looks to the future, they indicate that all possibilities are still on the table.

After launching earlier this year to mixed reviews, Sea of Thieves has been steadily working towards making the game everything players want it to be. While critics had nothing but praise for the open world aspects of the game, they had problems with the lack of content, voicing concerns that there wasn’t enough to keep players engaged. Rare listened, deciding that their best answer was a steady stream of patches as well as three major expansions over the summer, with more to come later in the year. The first, titled The Hungering Deep, has already been released. The Cursed Sails and Forsaken Shores updates are expected in July and September, respectively.

During an interview with Game Informer, Rare's design director, Mike Chapman, and studio head, Craig Duncan, were asked about the inclusion of a Battle Royale mode. They appeared open to the possibility, but with a twist. Rare has no desire for their game to look like anybody else’s. Chapman stated:

“We see the Battle Royale thing, but I think there will be opportunities to do that kind of thing differently. It’s interesting where you can take PVP in the game, but we’d want to put a unique Sea of Thieves spin on it and do something completely surprising.”

Players shouldn’t expect a Battle Royale mode this year. Chapman explained the studio’s structure where three (soon to be four) individual teams work on different projects, allowing for the consistent updates. Their busy schedule leaves little wiggle room for 2018. Next year could be completely different. Community requests have played an important role in the direction the game has gone so far. World expansion and the addition of skeleton ships were added to the game after players actively expressed an interest. A Battle Royale mode could be added for the same reason.

Sea of Thieves’ full slate should give players plenty to look forward to through the remainder of the year. But if a Battle Royale mode is something the community has a strong desire for, they should continue requesting one. As Duncan noted, this wasn’t their first time being asked about including Battle Royale style content. With a game that relies heavily on its relationship with its community, Rare should consider the addition a strong possibility.
