Sea of Thieves plans on honoring the 20th anniversary of Banjo-Kazooie with a special item that players can soon purchase throughout the month of July. This item is a Bird and Bear Figurehead that serves as a nod to the classic platform video game.

Sea of Thieves is an action-adventure co-op game released in March that has players take on the role of pirates. Players gather together on pirate ships and go on adventures, with each player taking on a specific role on the ship. Together, they go on quests, collect loot and engage in combat with other players. It has a distinct cartoon-like design with gameplay that often allows players to do outlandish stunts.

On the other hand, Banjo-Kazooie is a classic platform video game originally released on the Nintendo 64 in 1988. That title followed the adventures of a bird and a bear who are trying to stop the evil plans of a witch. Many sequels followed, making it a much beloved franchise among older gamers. So what do these two games have in common? Rare is their developer. So in honor of the 20th anniversary of Banjo-Kazooie, Rare decided to treat Sea of Thieves players to a special limited item. The notes for a recent Sea of Thieves patch reads:

"To mark 20 Years of Banjo-Kazooie, players will now be able to purchase a majestic Bear & Bird Figurehead for a very fitting price of 1998 gold! This figurehead is only available during the month of July, so make sure you join in the celebration and purchase it while you can!"

The patch notes also mention the game banned players it confirmed as cheaters. Those players received emails indicating Rare took away their account privileges. The patch also includes a new effect that rocks boats whenever cannons fire, an easy exit from the PC game to desktop, a reduction in shop clutter and better spawn timers for Megaladon. The patch also fixes a few bugs and issues with the game.

Sea of Thieves got mixed reviews from critics, although it has its share of players. At one point, even an artist that worked on the game admitted it felt "repetitive and shallow." However, its concept was unique in that it offered an open shared world full of pirate adventures. Rare continues to release content for the game, including a massive update in May. It also continues to release patches dealing with game issues and adding content on a weekly basis.

This latest patch, though, should go over well with longtime Rare fans. Banjo-Kazooie holds a special place in the hearts of many gamers and many will want to spend the in-game gold to collect this limited 20th anniversary special treasure.
