Sea of Thieves is now offering an Affiliate Alliance option that will help players find a crew. Sea of Thieves is the kind of game that is better experienced with a group of friends rather than alone. While the game is technically possible to play alone, it is much more difficult to man ships and defend against enemies.

Sea of Thieves originally released to mixed reviews and was considered a critical disappointment. Most critics were troubled by the lack of content that the game featured during its early days, especially considering that it cost $60 when it released. The general consensus was that Sea of Thieves had a good foundation, but there just wasn't enough to do. Over the last year though, there have been new additions added to Sea of Thieves that make it much more interesting and well-rounded. In July of 2019 there were roughly 1.7 million players, but as of January of 2020 there is over 10 million and it has outsold Microsoft's expectations.

With all of these new features and more players, fans of the game have still struggled to put together a crew. To rectify this issue Rare has now incorporated the Affiliate Alliance feature on the Sea of Thieves website. The Affiliate Alliance section features popular fan communities that can be joined in order to make friends in-game. Currently there are several communities featured like the official Sea of Thieves subreddit, a French community, a Brazilian community, and others from different countries.

Players of the game also have the option of submitting their own fan community to be featured on the site. In order to get a community accepted that community must hit several criteria: follow the Community Code of Conduct, have an active moderation team and policy, be active for at least six months, have at least 1000 members, be primarily related to Sea of Thieves, and be a valuable contribution to the community. By becoming a part of the Affiliate Alliance owners of fan communities will also have the opportunity to join a private discord of other community leaders.

Sea of Thieves was highly anticipated upon release and it was hard to see how negatively the community responded to it. Several critics assumed that the title was never going to be able to bounce back from it's very shaky launch. After a full year of updates and responding to the passionate fan community, the game has become resounding success. The addition of the Affiliate Alliance will only help the game grow as players will have the ability to connect with other like-minded individuals and form their own pirate crews. Hopefully Rare can continue to make Sea of Thieves into the game that it should have been all along.
