Though Sea of Thieves bears many similarities to other co-ops, its battle pass system is arguably simpler and more frequently rewarding. All players are able to play Sea of Thieves Season 2, level up, and earn rewards. Those players who have purchased the Plunder Pass, a premium battle pass for Sea of Thieves, will earn more rewards throughout the season, but no one will be left out of the season should they choose not to purchase this pass. Season 2 of Sea of Thieves sees all pirates starting fresh at Level 1 and grinding to Level 100. To level up during the season, pirates will need to earn Renown, a kind of XP, and climb through the various tiers and rewards before Season 2 ends.

Earning Renown and reaching a new level for the season rewards cosmetics, gold, doubloons, and Ancient Coins. Renown is easy to earn, and nearly every activity a pirate or crew gets up to during their adventures can count toward leveling up. Renown is awarded based on the size and complexity of the activity, with three possible Tiers: Swift, Grand, and Epic. For those crews wanting to level up more quickly and enjoy all the seasonal spoils right away, Grand and Epic activities are guaranteed to reward more Renown. Pirates can prioritize these larger fights and events to earn the most Renown in the shortest amount of time. Here's how to earn Renown in Season 2 of Sea of Thieves.

Just about every action in Sea of Thieves has some amount of Renown associated with it. As a general rule, the more difficult the task, the greater the amount of Renown it earns players. Lists of all in-game activities that yield Renown, sorted by difficulty tier, appear below:

Swift

  • Visit islands
  • Sail nautical miles
  • Find buried treasure
  • Bring treasure safely aboard a ship
  • Sell treasure
  • Catch a fish
  • Catch a Trophy fish (grants extra Renown in addition to regular Renown awarded for catching fish)
  • Eat perfectly cooked meat
  • Sell meat
  • Scuttle a Ghost Ship

Grand

  • Defeat one Skeleton Captain, Ashen Guardian, or Ashen Key Master
  • Cook meat perfectly
  • Cook monster meat perfectly
  • Complete chapters in a voyage
  • Complete a voyage
  • Complete a checkpoint in a Tall Tale
  • Complete a Tall Tale
  • Injure a Kraken Tentacle

Epic

  • Kill 10 Skeletons
  • Slay a Kraken
  • Slay a Megalodon
  • Scuttle a Skeleton Ship
  • Complete a World Event

Each of these actions is repeatable and will earn individuals or crews Renown each time they are repeated. Pirates and crews can also earn some Renown for participating in special events that take place throughout the season and for participating in PvP battles.

Pirates can earn the bulk of their Renown by completing Trials. Unlike most games that include a battle pass, all Trials for Sea of Thieves Season 2 are already unlocked for all players, and no more will appear this season. This means crews get to decide which Trials to complete and in which order to complete them. They can start multiple Trials at once, and each Trial rewards far more Renown than the repeatable activities. Every Trial contains individual tasks, called Deeds, that range in difficulty from simply reviving a crewmate to completing Forts of Fortune. Pirates can earn Renown for completing individual Deeds and for completing each Trial in full.

Some Season 2 Deeds will require players to have special equipment, available from Resource Crates sold by the Merchant. When players first launch Sea of Thieves, they can interact with the blue book near the Merchant and pick up one of every Resource Crate to prepare for most of their equipment-specific Deeds. They can then visit the Vanity chest to equip some of the gear. Without specific items equipped, it is possible some Season 2 Deeds won't register as complete or reward the expected Renown, so players should be sure to read everything carefully.
