It’s been a long time coming, but Rare’s hotly anticipated pirate game Sea of Thieves now has a release date. Announced during The Game Awards 2017 alongside a new Sea of Thieves trailer, the stylistic multiplayer open seas game will release exclusive on Xbox One and Windows 10 on March 20, 2018.

We had the opportunity to get hands on with Sea of Thieves at E3 2016 and labelled it the best game of the show, and something that was as fun as the cartoonish and stylish gameplay footage played during the Xbox press conference that year. At the event, Xbox had setup rows of five Xbox stations each, so we could play 5 vs. 5 vs. 5 alongside other attendees and devs, and it was as fun as it was funny.

Sea of Thieves is a first-person co-op multiplayer game that takes place in a shared open-world where teams players and their crew can seamlessly move around their ship, and off it into the waters and other islands. When on the ships, players can move around and take on different roles, from manning the cannons, hoisting the sails, and repairing damage to steering the vessel itself. Players can encounter other crews, and crossplay is supported between PC and Xbox players, while engaging on quests and searching for treasure.

Players who digitally pre-order will receive exclusive access to a pre-release closed beta, providing the perfect opportunity for fans to find their sea legs ahead of launch. In addition, players will score free loot in the form of the Black Dog Pack, offering stylish clothing with unique, spectacular designs.

Sea of Thieves Custom Xbox Controller Sea of Thieves Finally Gets A Release Date

In addition to the release date and trailer, Xbox and Rare also unveiled what may be the most impressive custom Xbox One controller design to date. The Xbox Wireless Controller – Sea of Thieves Limited Edition features a deep purple translucent design, with laser etched barnacles, one golden trigger and a mysterious skull that glows in the dark. It’s available for pre-order now for $74.99 USD, and releases globally in all Xbox One markets on Feb. 6, 2018. In addition, the controller comes with the exclusive Ferryman clothing set for your Sea of Thieves character, a 14-day trial of Xbox Live Gold and a 14-day trial of Xbox Game Pass.
