Players of Rare's Sea of Thieves suspect another crossover might be on the horizon after a Monkey Island Easter egg was discovered in the game. The developer recently launched the Sea of Thieves Pirates of the Caribbean crossover entitled "A Pirate's Life", which caused the base game to rise in the Steam charts as players flocked to experience the tie-in featuring Captain Jack Sparrow. The success of the big-name collaboration could point to similar expansions in the future, and Monkey Island could be a perfect fit.

Sea of Thieves is a first-person open-world pirate adventure in a sandbox world where almost anything is possible. Players can tackle the Seven Seas solo or with friends, completing quests, uncovering treasures, and discovering islands. The game's recent Pirates of the Caribbean crossover released on June 22 and gives players the chance to fight alongside Captain Jack himself. Gamers have overall been impressed with the movie tie-in, and with lots of options for future Sea of Thieves crossovers, it's hoped Rare will add similar story content in the future.

While the developer hasn't announced if more crossovers are coming, players think a Monkey Island tie-in is next on the agenda. Savvy players have discovered that end-game content for A Pirate's Life includes a nod to Monkey Island (please note, this is a spoiler for the Pirates of the Caribbean expansion, so tread carefully if it's not been completed). Players explore a shipwreck towards the end of the story where the Monkey Island theme music can be heard. It then emerges that the ship itself belonged to Captain Kate Capsize, a character from the second game in the Monkey Island series. While this is by no means confirmation that a crossover is coming, it's definitely an interesting Easter egg, especially as Monkey Island, like Pirates of the Caribbean, is a Disney-owned IP. YouTuber xGarbett captured the potential tease in the video below.

The Monkey Island series is one beloved by gamers, and a Sea of Thieves crossover would be a very welcome addition to Rare's pirate adventure. The Monkey Island legacy first began in 1990 with the release of The Secret of Monkey Island. The last game in the series released in 2009, when Telltale Games partnered with LucasArts to release the episodic Tales of Monkey Island. The game is considered to be one of the best Telltale Games titles, including The Walking Dead, and The Wolf Among Us. The complete game consists of five episodes that were released periodically, in a similar way to other Telltale games. Little has happened with the IP since then, despite the games being considered as some of the best in the point-and-click genre.

While nothing is set in stone, Monkey Island could be poised for a revival thanks to a rebrand of Disney's gaming division. Earlier this year it was announced that the Lucasfilm gaming arm would be rebranded, with Disney stating: "Lucasfilm Games is now the official identity for all gaming titles from Lucasfilm, a name that encompasses the company’s rich catalog of video games and its eye toward the future." The Lucasfilm Games rebrand will usher in a new era of Star Wars games, but the news also gives hope for revivals of classic LucasArts games including Grim Fandango and, of course, Monkey Island. It's not known if Disney has plans for the future of Monkey Island, but a Sea of Thieves crossover would be a great place to start.
