A furry update is heading to Sea of Thieves allowing players to adopt dogs to take with them on their journey, and yes, players can pet them. Sea of Thieves allows players to live out their wildest fantasies as pirates on the open seas. While players can invite their friends on adventures, solo players are about to be a lot less lonely with the addition of four-legged friends.

Sea of Thieves was released in 2018 and is developed by Rare, the famed devs of Banjo Kazooie and Battletoads. Over the past two years, Sea of Thieves has received a series of content updates that have included new quests, bosses to fight, and in-game events. The most recent update, Ashenwind, added Ashen Lords which was a new take on the game's Skeleton Lords bosses. These flaming piles of bones are equipped with an arsenal of firey weaponry, but offer players great rewards for defeating them.

However, Sea of Thieves announced it would be receiving a friendlier update in the coming future that adds doggos as companions. These dogs come in various breeds, and a tweet from Sea of Thieves made it explicitly clear that players will be able to pet and hug their dogs. The update is planned to launch in September alongside a slew of new content. The video below outlines what all players can expect to see from the dog update and what is planned for Sea of Thieves over the next year.

Cats joined Sea of Thieves as pet companions earlier in 2020, but now the dev team has been focused on fulfilling the request for dogs. There is an assortment of breeds for players to choose from, and players can expect a quite realistic experience from the canines. As shown in the Dev Gameplay Update, the dogs will need to relieve themselves and will get into other dog-like antics. Seafaring dogs are right around the corner and will include the same level of charm and humor that Sea of Thieves players have come to love.

With the inclusion of dogs, what more could players want? The details of what the dogs will be capable of were not discussed in the dev log, but just being able to have a dog is good enough. Sure, they'll make a mess of the player's ship and chew off the pomels of all their swords, but players will be able to pet them and love them and that's just the kind of wholesome content Sea of Thieves players need while sailing the seven seas.
