Sarah Chalke is open to return to Scrubs for a revival. The medical comedy premiered in 2001 on NBC where it ran for seven seasons, and on ABC for its last two. The show was created by Bill Lawrence, known for Spin City and the ongoing Ted Lasso, and follows the lives of the Sacred Heart Hospital staff through the narration of John Dorian (J.D.), played by Zach Braff. The series also starred Chalke, Donald Faison, John C. McGinley, Ken Jenkins, Neil Flynn, and Judy Reyes.
The show's humor stems from its fun-loving, energetic characters and sharp writing, as well as the voiceovers and surreal, exaggerated fantasies of the main characters, most notably J.D. Chalke portrayed the lovable, neurotic Elliot Reid, who was the on-and-off love interest of J.D. for seven seasons before restarting a relationship with him in the season 8, eventually marrying and having a child with him in the final season.
Now in an interview with Variety's Just for Variety podcast, Chalke commented that the idea of a reboot for the show has been discussed and how the cast would love to do it, but like many reboots, it is a matter of timing and when everyone is available. Chalke has since been keeping busy playing numerous roles on television, including voicing Beth Smith on the popular science-fiction sitcom Rick and Morty and starring in the Netflix drama Firefly Lane with Katherine Heigl. Chalke's full statement can be read below:
"I would be into it. I would love to do it. We’ve talked about. I think everybody’s lives is so crazy, but we all talk about how cool it’d be to do something like the “Psych” cast did. I think it’d be so much fun to do something like that."
Scrubs has previously had a kind of reboot for its final season. Season 8 was meant to be the show's last, with a closing double-length finale concluding all the stories of the characters. However, the series was renewed for season 9 and while some of the main cast returned, like Faison and McGinley, the show had a completely different cast that included Kerry Bishé, Dave Franco, and Michael Mosley as medical students. Bishé's character Lucy Bennett, would take over the narrator perspective from Braff's J.D.
Since the final season of Scrubs was not as well-reviewed as the previous eight, it is safe to assume that if the show does come back for a revival, it would include the original cast. Lawrence has previously reunited a few of the cast members, including Chalke, on his subsequent series Cougar Town, where fans got to catch up with one of the characters from the series, Ted Buckland, played by the late Sam Lloyd. And it would be interesting to see what the other characters of Scrubs are up to, should the series get a revival.
