After a critically and commercially disappointing first two seasons, MTV is shaking things up with its third season of the meta-horror television series, Scream. Based on Wes Craven's film tetralogy of the same name, the series is more or less starting from scratch, in a move that Scream 4's Robbie Mercer might call "a third-act main cast bloodbath."
First airing in 2015 with Jill Blotevogel, Dan Dworkin, and Jay Beattie in the producers chairs, those seats have since been replaced with new blood, making way for Shakim Conpere, Yaneley Arty, and Queen Latifah. Supernatural producer/writer Brett Matthews will be the series' new showrunner.
What's especially intriguing is the fact that MTV is even going so far as to gut its entire cast (in terms of finding replacements, that is) and refreshing the series by assembling an entirely new pack of film-savvy teens who will ultimately find themselves prey to a masked killer with a penchant for horror movie trivia. And though there is no official release date as of yet, MTV has released an official cast list, as reported by Deadline:
Keke Palmer is going from Scream Queens to Scream as the socially-woke Kym. Once the killer shows up, it's clear that Kym doesn't just show her strength in the wake of social activism, but against anyone brave (or stupid) enough to go head-to-head with her.
RJ Cyler (who played Billy in Power Rangers) will star as Deion, his high school's star football player. When audiences are introduced to him, Deion is on en route to an athletic scholarship, only to have his aspirations thwarted by a secret which the killer somehow has his or her hands on.
Jessica Sula (Split) will be the series' new kid on the block who takes a liking to Deion, Liv. On the surface, she seems to have it all - a spot on the cheerleading squad, straight-A's - but all is not as it seems, especially given the fact that she may be hiding a few secrets of her own.
Giorgia Whigham (13 Reasons Why) will star as the local goth, Beth. In the tradition of Randy Meeks, Robbie Mercer, and Charlie Walker, Beth is a tattoo artist, a horror fiend, and an obvious usual suspect once her town begins to mirror the very movie genre with which she's so obsessed.
C.J. Wallace (who starred in Kicks, and whose father is the late Notorious B.I.G.) will star as Amir. Not unlike the actor's late-father, Amir is music-oriented, with ambitions much bigger than the town in which he's currently stuck. Unfortunately, his parents aren't too keen on him making music his ultimate goal.
Giullian Yao Gioiello (Julie's Greenroom) will star as the series' book-smart and openly gay Manny. While it's safe to say that his sexual orientation could easily tie in with Deion's mysterious "secret" (though that's a completely unsubstantiated educated guess), there aren't any more details regarding the goings-on of this character, aside from the fact that he, too, will have to face off against the local, unlicensed executioner.
Finally, rounding out the cast is rapper Tyga (who starred in Barbershop: The Next Cut), whose character, Jamal, is Deion's step-brother. The only information regarding his character is that he and Deion are very close.
The third season of Scream will air on MTV in March 2017.
