A new promo video for Scream season 3 showcases a day in the life of Ghostface. The killer that seemed to dominate the latter half of the 1990s before losing momentum in the early 2000s is on his (or possibly her) way back to wreak havoc once more.

After the unexpected huge success of Wes Craven’s teen-slasher Scream in 1996, the franchise took off. Scream’s success was largely attributable to its subverting of a genre that Craven himself had a hand in. By pointing out the all too often ridiculousness of slasher films, while still managing to maintain a gripping mystery at its core, Scream was unlike anything else released up to that point in the genre. Mixing humor, jump scares, and an outright refusal to take itself too seriously, the film gave rise to three sequels, the last of which arrived in 2011 and marked the return of original cast members Neve Campbell, David Arquette, and Courtney Cox. The film failed to reach the heights that the original did (as have all the sequels to date), but in 2012, MTV announced they would turn the franchise into a TV series.

Scream fans have been patiently waiting for the third season to arrive after 2016’s second season ended with the promise that a killer was still on the loose. The third series has been sitting in development hell since 2017, as The Weinstein Company held its rights and the Harvey Weinstein scandal helped to create a major setback. Now, however, VH1 has taken over and the new season - titled Scream: Resurrection - is set to air in three parts, on three consecutive nights starting Monday, July 8. Scream fans will be delighted to know that the work behind promoting the new series has begun, and things have kicked off via VH1’s Scream Twitter account with a new video showcasing a day in the life of Ghostface. Check it out below:

The promo video runs close to a minute and half and indicates that a sense of humor may be on its way back into Scream. Starting off quite menacing, the short video allows viewers to see day-to-day life through the eyes of the killer as they stalk their prey. This doesn’t last long, however, and viewers are soon treated to shots of Ghostface performing mundane, regular activities, such as eating cereal, scratching his or her foot (albeit with a severed hand), and slicing a cucumber. It’s silly in the greatest sense of the word, but it’s a very interesting way to kick off what will be a brand new murder mystery, complete with a new cast. What’s more, the third season (which is executive produced by Queen Latifah) will mark the return of the original Ghostface mask from the films, something that many Scream fans sorely missed in MTV's series.

Hopefully this new series is more of a return to what made the original Scream film so special. That’s not to say that MTV’s series wasn’t good, but for too long after the release of 1996’s Scream, the franchise seemed to completely lose sight of what had made it such a success in the first place. The ability to mock itself as well as the genre it was a part of, as well as its clever plot twists still make Scream worth returning to again and again. It’s too early to say what VH1’s Scream: Resurrection will bring, but Scream fans everywhere are genuinely hoping it’s worthy of the Ghostface legacy.
