There's no denying that Wes Craven's Scream franchise is one of the most well-known in horror history, and a big reason for that is how entertaining the films are. The aspect of mystery and the decision to blend comedy with the gore and horror of a slasher movie worked perfectly to create several brilliant movies.

Of course, it is still the original Scream that stands out as the strongest of the four movies to date, and this is the one that helped make Ghostface a true horror icon. The film is gripping throughout and offers an equal level of scares and laughs, which keeps audiences entertained all the way through.

Scariest: Bathroom Scare

Scream Bathroom

Shortly after final girl Sidney Prescott is attacked for the first time, she heads back to school and tries to resume a normal life. However, things aren't that way for her after a school prank sees people running around dressed as Ghostface right from the moment she arrives.

However, one of the scariest moments comes when she's alone in the bathroom. Sidney hears a voice and checks under the stalls where Ghostface appears, providing a great jump scare as the masked maniac leaps out with Sidney sprinting away at the last second.

Funniest: "Treat Me Like A Man Of Law"

Dewey in Scream

Deputy Dewey provides plenty of humor throughout the movie as he learns the ropes and works unconfidently at times in his role. When Sidney first goes to Woodsboro's police station after being attacked by Ghostface, he provides a hilarious moment with his sister, Tatum.

She wants to take Sidney home and doesn't treat Dewey with respect, instead, acting like they would at home. This leads to Dewey standing up for himself and trying to be confident as he mentions how their mother told her to respect him for his role. It's funny as he needs to rely upon his mother, despite the fact he works in law enforcement.

Scariest: Garage Death

Tatum gets stuck in the garage door in a scene from 'Scream'

Tatum plays a big part in the movie up until her death at the party, and it is certainly one of the scariest moments in the film. She originally thinks that it is Randy having a joke as the lights go off, and it leads to a great encounter between her and Ghostface.

While she gets the upper hand originally, launching several beer bottles at Ghostface, things end up taking a turn for the worst when she tries to escape via the cat flap. It leads to arguably the most brutal death of the film as Ghostface sets the garage door up, to the point where she is crushed to death.

Funniest: It's A Knockout

Gale Weathers

Early on in the movie, Gale Weathers is shown to be a no-nonsense news reporter whose only focus is getting the scoops, no matter what the cost. This leads her to heading down an alleyway to confront Sidney in the hopes of getting a fun exclusive.

However, all Gale actually gets is a sweet right hook from Sidney. It's a hilarious moment as Sidney calls her a "b**ch" and throws a mean punch straight to Gale, which serves her right for showing a lack of respect.

Scariest: The Big Reveal

Billy and Stu in Scream

While it is certainly scary seeing Ghostface running around with the element of mystery, the moment where Billy and Stu reveal themselves is equally as terrifying. This is when it becomes clear just how unhinged they are, with the two of them trapping Sidney and causing her nothing but fear.

With Billy being a creepy psychopath and Stu being over the top and crazy, the duo becomes incredibly scary and creepy as they have everything planned out. While it doesn't quite work out for them, that doesn't stop it being scary, purely down to how unhinged they are.

Funniest: Randy Explains The Rules

Inside the video rental, Randy first begins to break down the rules of a horror movie. His delivery of the lines within this scene is hilarious in itself as he gets incredibly excited about everything that he says. Seeing him go wild about everything is very funny and the fact that the movie is so self-aware also adds into this.

Randy discusses the rules of horror films even further later on in the film at the party, and this is just as funny because of that self-awareness. It's what makes Scream stand out as a movie, in general, and that's a big part of the movies charm.

Scariest: Sidney Meets Ghostface

Sidney on the phone in Scream

The very first time Sidney encounters Ghostface is an incredibly scary moment in the film. It comes very soon after his first big kill, which comes as a surprise, and the way he works on the phone with her really creates a creepy moment between them.

Providing a big scare when he first pops out of the closet to attack her, it seems like she's going to be the net big victim as she manages to fight her way out of it. The situation is incredibly scary and the tension is high right from the start.

Funniest: Look Behind You

Scream Randy and Ghostface Cropped

Randy is the king of the horror movie and he knows all the tropes and the things that can be expected. That's why when he's watching a horror film at the party and commentating, while also being oblivious to the fact he's living in a horror is very funny.

He's begging the main character of the film he's watching to turn around and be aware, all while Ghostface is right behind him preparing to stab him. The mix between the two creates a very funny moment.

Scariest: Killing Casey Becker

Casey Becker yelling in Scream

The scariest scene from Scream comes right at the start of the movie and really sets the tone for the entire film. Most people expected Drew Barrymore to be the major star of the film, so when she's killed in the first scene of the movie, it really sets the tone for the entire story and breaks horror movie tropes all in one.

The phonecall is incredibly creepy, as Casey sees her boyfriend killed and struggles to work out where Ghostface is. The teases of him running through the house add to the excitement and her eventual death with her parents just being seconds away create an incredible scare.

Funniest: Cleaning The Windscreen

Scream cameraman death

Even in the midst of all the action in the final third of the movie, Scream still finds the time to produce humor and laughs. This comes when Gale Weathers gets into her van looking to drive away but finds out her cameraman, laid on the roof, hanging down onto the windscreen.

While Gale tries to use the wipers to get rid of all the blood, it doesn't end up working and she has to drive around to swing him off the car. It's hilarious when she apologizes to him while swinging him away, taking a serious moment and blending in a little humor.
