A new clip from the highly-anticipated Scream features Dewey explaining in detail how to find the new Ghostface. The first Scream revolutionized the horror genre upon its release in 1996. Chock-full of self-awareness and meta-commentary on the horror genre itself, Scream launched a successful franchise, which now includes a TV show and four feature films, the fifth of which, simply titled Scream, is due out in mid-January.

Trailers and promotional material for the upcoming Scream film showcase both returning and new characters and promise a scarier, more brutal version of the iconic Ghostface killer. Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette are all reprising their roles as Sidney, Gale, and Dewey, respectively, while newcomers Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera, Dylan Minnette, and Jack Quaid round out the rest of the cast. With the returning cast members now grizzled veterans when it comes to surviving the masked killer, trailers for Scream have made clear that it will take a joint effort between the old blood and the new to take down the latest iteration of Ghostface, and not everyone will make it out alive.

In a new clip from Scream aired on LIVE With Kelly and Ryan (via Twitter user Stev), Arquette's character can be seen giving a lesson to Barrera and Quaid's characters, laying out a series of rules that will help them catch the new Ghostface. The scene, which includes the rule "never trust the love interest," harkens back to a moment in the original movie when Randy Meeks explains the "rules" one needs to follow to survive a horror movie. While Meeks' rules in the 1996 original film carry a slightly more humorous tone when they're delivered, Dewey's speech is decidedly more serious, likely a result of his continued torment by Ghostface over the years. In addition to "never trust the love interest," Dewey also explains that "the killer's motive is always connected to something in the past," and that the killer is always part of the first victim's friend group. While trailers have already revealed that Dewey does eventually join the hunt for Ghostface, this scene suggests that, at least at first, he's happy to just give advice to the new set of potential victims.

Fans of the original Scream will likely be happy to see the new film sticking to the series' signature self-awareness. In the clip, for example, Dewey references the three-act structure typical of most Hollywood movies and says that "act three" is when Barrera and Quaid's characters can expect a seemingly trustworthy romantic interest to turn on them. While the identity of the new Ghostface is still a mystery, it seems like, after numerous brushes with death, Dewey is equipped with the knowledge necessary to catch the new killer. Scream is scheduled to release exclusively in theaters on January 14th.
