Horror fans can most likely recite every quote from Scream and think of every famous scene. The same is probably true of the three sequels as well. Scream is a staple of the horror genre and is proof that sometimes a second movie can actually be awesome. Whether watching Sidney see her town of Woodsboro become a truly scary place or when she comes back to her small town in the fourth movie, fans can't ever get enough of this intelligent story.

Fans have some lingering questions about the Scream franchise and it will be interesting to check out the fifth movie in January 2022. Until then, fans can think about the most memorable moments from the past four films, as most of them are totally terrifying.

The Opening Scene In Scream

Casey talking on the phone and looking scared in the opening of Scream

The franchise's famous killer Ghostface makes his appearance in the opening scene of Scream. This is not only one of the greatest openings of any horror movie but it's a scene that fans can't ever forget.

Casey is going about her evening, making popcorn, when the phone rings. It's easy for the teenage girl to assume that it's just a wrong number, but as he keeps calling back and the conversation becomes increasingly sinister, she realizes that her life might be in total danger. From seeing her boyfriend tied up in the backyard to trying to guess some horror movie trivia, this scene is really well-crafted.

The Dewey Fake-Out

David Arquette as Dewey Riley in Scream 4

In the first movie, Sidney runs to the front door and Dewey's holding the Ghostface mask. She screams and he does, too, which is proof of the horror movie's blend of scares and comedy.

This is a memorable scene and a popular one, too, since Dewey is a kind character. While his colleagues seem like they could care less about what's going on in the town, Dewey is interested in finding the killer and being a source of support for Sidney, since she's friends with his sister Tatum.

Tatum's Garage Door Death

Tatum screaming in the parking garage scene in Scream

While Tatum doesn't seem as freaked out by the murders in Woodsboro as everyone else is, she does think that her boyfriend Stu is being a jerk about the whole situation. Of course, she doesn't know that he's one of the killers.

The way that Tatum dies is pretty wild and memorable, as she goes into the garage during a party and tries to escape from Ghostface by going through the tiny pet door. This is a Scream scene that fans will always remember, as Tatum gets stuck and Ghostface moves the door up, killing her.

Randy Explaining The Horror Movie Rules

Randy talking in Scream

In the first Scream movie, Randy explains the rules that characters in a horror movie must follow.

The Scream franchise is a meta parody of horror movies so no one could ever forget his words. He says, "There are certain rules that one must abide by in order to successfully survive a horror movie. For instance, number one: you can never have sex." He said that drugs and alcohol were also a problem and that no one should say "I'll be right back." When his pal Stu repeats that line, Randy says, "See, you push the laws and you end up dead. Okay, I'll see you in the kitchen with a knife."

The Movie Theater Scene In Scream 2

The opening scene of Scream 2 is just as surprising and terrifying as the way that the first movie begins. A couple, Maureen and Phil, go to the movies to see Stab, the fictional movie based on the real events that Sidney and her friends experienced.

When Phil goes to the bathroom, Ghostface murders him, and Maureen is literally murdered while watching the movie. It's a memorable way to start a film, that's for sure, and proved to audiences that this sequel was going to be just as good as the first one.

Cici's Death In Scream 2

Sarah Michelle Gellar in Scream 2 on the phone.

It's fun to see Buffy's Sarah Michelle Gellar play sorority student Cici Cooper in the second movie in the franchise.

Her death scene is another one that fans will always remember. She's home by herself in the sorority house when the phone rings. It's Ghostface and he asks, "Do you want to die tonight, Cici?" She hangs up but he keeps calling back, and she becomes increasingly freaked out. At first, she thinks that it's her boyfriend Ted, but then Ghostface attacks her. Cici runs up to the house's second floor and is murdered. This is such a memorable scene partly because of how much pop culture fans love Sarah Michelle Gellar and it's also a reminder of how Ghostface is a big threat to everyone.

When Ghostface Kills Cotton And His Girlfriend In Scream 3

Cotton Weary holding up a gun in Scream 2

Cotton Weary tries to make money from Sidney's life and at the beginning of Scream 3, he's doing his best to do just that. He has a talk show called 100% Cotton, which is pretty gross.

In an unforgettable scene, Ghostface makes Cotton and his girlfriend their target, and they're attacked and killed in Cotton's house. It's hard to forget about this since no one was sure if Cotton would ever survive Ghostface's wrath, since he was an original suspect.

Seeing Sidney Hiding Away In Scream 3

Sidney Prescott holding her hand to her forehead in Scream 3

Sidney Prescott might not know that Billy is one of the killers in the first Scream movie, but she becomes a lot wiser by the third movie in the popular horror franchise.

Who could forget learning that Sidney was hiding away in a secret location, answering phone calls and helping people who were experiencing their own tough times and abuse? Before too long, Ghostface would know exactly where she was. This scene is powerful and scary since it proves how much Sidney has been affected by the tragedies she has faced.

Scream 4's Opening Scene

Britt Robertson and Aimee Teegarden in Scream

The opening scene of Scream 4 is super intelligent, as two teenage girls Marnie and Jenny watch Stab 7, which is memorable in itself since it's amazing that the fictional franchise has gone on for so long.

Jenny tries to pretend to be Ghostface, but Ghostface then murders them both, proving that life imitates art (and vice versa) in this horror universe.

Sidney's Niece Jill Is The New Ghostface

It's perfect for Sidney's niece Jill to be the new Ghostface in Scream 4 (along with her friend Charlie).

This reveal at the end of the movie is a memorable and significant one. It proves that Sidney still can't predict who is going to be the next killer in the story, and it isolates her even more, as Jill was one of the only family members she had left. This really drives home the many tragedies in Sidney's life and the fact that even after all these years, she can't escape these horrors.
