A new Scream (2022) video teases a very emotional reunion between Gale and Dewey. The upcoming movie is the fifth entry in the popular slasher franchise, which started with Wes Craven's Scream back in 1996. The new film, which shares a title with the original, is set to release theatrically on January 14.

While the film is intended to revive the series, it acts as a direct sequel to 2011's Scream 4 and contains a cast of both new and returning actors. Of the familiar faces, franchise stars Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette all reprise their roles as Sydney, Gale, and Dewey, respectively, with Roger L. Jackson also continuing his iconic work as the voice of the masked killer, Ghostface. Among the new group of teenagers who find themselves pursued by the copycat are In The Heights' Melissa Barrera, Booksmart's Mason Gooding, and 13 Reasons Why's Dylan Minnette.

Now, in a new Scream featurette shared by Paramount Pictures, co-director Tyler Gillett teases that the reunion between Gale and Dewey gets "real emotional."Dewey, meanwhile, is said to get a lot of screen time in this movie, hinting at an emphasis on his character's state of mind. Arquette expresses his excitement at fans getting to see how these characters they know and love have progressed in their lives, and he relishes in particular the chance to see Campbell be a "badass" again. Some fans have been understandably wary about another Scream movie, given that this will be the first of the franchise not to be directed by genre-legend Craven, who passed in 2015. Taking his place are Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, who previously teamed up to make 2019's well-received horror-comedy Ready or Not, giving reason to hope they nail this sequel's unique tone. The return of the franchise's key stars is also a comfort, though the studio will surely be hoping they can spin a new series of movies out of the film's younger cast, begging the question of how the focus will be divided between new and familiar characters.

Those hesitant fans have also received another reason to be optimistic, as the first reactions to Scream (2022) have been very positive so far. Many of those who received early access to the film have dubbed it their favorite since Craven's original, and suggested that anyone who loves the franchise will have a blast with this latest entry. Should the new Scream indeed prove a hit with audiences, it would only be the latest piece of evidence that the slasher sub-genre is making a comeback, something that could prove quite exciting for horror aficionados.
