The new Scream 6 Super Bowl trailer has been officially released, and it showcases a scene that couldn't happen without its new urban setting. The film, which is due in theaters on March 10, is the sixth entry in the Scream franchise. It will follow the survivors of Scream 2022 as they are stalked by a new Ghostface killer in New York City.

Today, Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media Group shared the one-minute ad for their upcoming horror movie Scream 6 that will run during the Super Bowl this Sunday. Additionally, Dolby Cinema also released a new poster today, included below:

Although the teaser does offer new overall insights and lines of dialogue, including the decision to “execute” Ghostface, it largely homes in on one moment previously only shown briefly in the official trailer. This sequence sees the cast - including Melissa Barrera as Sam - escaping an apartment building by climbing across a rickety ladder to another building, something that couldn’t have happened in the characters’ hometown of Woodsboro.

The New Scream 6 Trailer Reveals Its Homage to Scream 2

Ghostface in Scream 6

Although this new trailer is brief, the scene it highlights reveals a major aspect of Scream 6. The previous film was a legacy sequel or "re-quel," keeping established continuity while introducing a new ongoing storyline with fresh characters. It seems that Scream 6 will keep that ball rolling by echoing many elements of the original 1997 sequel Scream 2.

One aspect that drove the success of Scream 2 was its suspense sequences. This includes one featuring Courteney Cox's Gale Weathers being chased by Ghostface through a recording studio. Scream 6's ladder scene seems to combine elements of that chase with another sequence, when Sidney (Neve Campbell) and her roommate Hallie (Elise Neal) have to escape a cop car by climbing over an unconscious Ghostface.

It is more than likely this won't be the end of Scream 6's homages to the original Scream sequel. If they intend on echoing its plot and tone in more ways than one, this may lend credence to the theory this killer is related to one of the original killers from the first three films. One of Scream 2's killers was revealed to be the mother of original killer Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich), so a similar revelation may be in the cards this March.
