Scream 6 star Jenna Ortega, who plays Tara, comments on Neve Campbell's Sidney not being a part of the upcoming installment. After the success of last year's legacy sequel, new characters like Tara, Sam (Melissa Barrera), Chad (Mason Gooding), and Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown) will be returning in Scream 6. While the newcomers shared the screen with original franchise characters like Sidney, Gale (Courteney Cox), and Dewey (David Arquette), the upcoming installment will notably not feature Campbell returning to the role due to a pay dispute.

In a recent interview with Elle, Ortega addresses Campbell's absence from Scream 6, making her the latest of several franchise stars to comment on the actor's decision not to return. Ortega calls the entire situation "unfortunate," acknowledging Campbell's immense contribution to the franchise's success. Check out the actor's full comment below:

“It was really unfortunate, especially because Neve is the coolest, sweetest, most talented lady. The franchise wouldn’t be what it is without her.”

Can The Scream Franchise Succeed Without Sidney Prescott?

Neve Campbell holding a gun as Sidney in Scream 5.

Sidney has been an integral part of every previous Scream movie, and she is arguably just as recognizable as the iconic Ghostface. Cutting out a core original character could spell trouble for Scream 6 and beyond, but last year's soft reboot did introduce a host of interesting new characters to explore. With only one original character returning (not counting Hayden Panettiere's Kirby, who joined the franchise in 2011), the upcoming installment will really be the test in terms of whether the franchise needs Sidney in order to succeed.

The first reactions to Scream 6 would suggest that the franchise can indeed push forward with the newer cast members leading the charge. Depending on what happens to Gale and Kirby, the upcoming film could be the movie that fully passes the baton to new cast members like Barrera and Ortega. That being said, it's certainly possible that Sidney could return later down the line in future installments.

It's been said that the upcoming movie will handle Campbell's absence in a respectful way, and it does sound as if the door will be left open for her potential franchise return. Campbell herself has expressed interest in reprising her Scream franchise role, should she be presented with an acceptable salary offer. While it remains to be seen just how successful Scream 6 will be without Sidney leading the fight against Ghostface, it does seem likely that audiences haven't seen the last of the iconic original character just yet.
