The new trailer for Scream 6 gives a better look into the terror Ghostface will cause while hunting Sam (Melissa Barrera), Tara (Jenna Ortega), and their friends in New York City. The upcoming Scream installment will also feature the return of legacy character Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) as well as franchise fan favorite Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere). The pair will team up with the Carpenter sisters and other allies as a new Ghostface killer wreaks havoc after targeting the survivors outside of Woodsboro.

Following the events of 2022's Scream, Tara goes off to college with fellow survivors Chad and Mindy Meeks-Martin (Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown). As the protective big sister, Sam follows Tara to New York City shortly before the group comes face to face with Ghostface yet again.

As teased in the full Scream 6 trailer, Ghostface will use the city surroundings to their advantage while not hesitating to kill if innocent citizens get in the way. As always, the core group will acquire an impressive group of allies, but they won't all make it out alive. Though Ghostface's identity and motivations will remain a mystery, the Scream 6 trailer does tease a number of intriguing story details.

The Scream 6 trailer begins with Sam and Tara frantically running into a bodega, where they ask for help. Ghostface also enters, and one specific patron fails to understand the immediate threat. Rather than run, the customer acts like a tough guy, leading to his quick death. The sequence just proves how brazen Ghostface is this time around, which follows along with the fact that New York City won't deter the killer.

11 Ghostface Acquires A Shotgun In Scream 6

Throughout the first five Scream movies, Ghostface has been known to carry a hunting knife. The killer will still have the trusty weapon, as well as others found during this movie's massacre; the bodega scene even leads to a new weapon: a shotgun. Ghostface snatches the gun from the bodega before using it to kill the man. He then tries to find Sam and Tara within the store as they hide in an aisle, terrified.

10 Sam Is Still Struggling With Her Past

Sam holds the a cracked and bloody Ghostface mask in Scream 6

2022's Scream revealed that Sam was actually the daughter of Billy Loomis. To make matters more complicated, she worried that his killer tendencies were also inside of her, which Sam is still struggling with being the Billy Loomis arc twist in Scream 6. Sam is also worrying the darkness has followed her to New York City, but in this case, that darkness is Ghostface, and the killer is back to take out her and everyone she cares about.

9 Kirby Is Officially Back (& She Shares Something In Common With Sam)

Hayden Panettiere as Kirby Reed in the Scream 6 trailer

The Scream 6 teaser didn't feature the return of Kirby, but thankfully, she appears in the full trailer. As Sam shares that Ghostface will never stop coming for them, Kirby states that "we share a certain history," commenting on the fact that she also survived one of Ghostface's massacres. Like Sam and the others, Kirby fully knows that Ghostface won't stop until the job is done. In fact, she's now a cop, so she's better trained to take care of the killer this time around.

8 Scream 6's Ghostface Has A Shrine

After Kirby states that this is a different Ghostface, implying that the killer has taken the mission to a new level, the Scream 6 trailer shows Ghostface's shrine. The shrine, which seemingly occupies an abandoned theater, houses a slew of franchise Easter eggs and references. Not only has this Ghostface acquired items connected to past killings, but they also got their hands on outfits from those killed in past movies, such as Steve, Tatum, Billy, Stu, and Jill. It also looks like Ghostface acquired the costumes of all the past killers and proudly displayed them on the stage.

7 Scream 6 Gives Gale Her First Ghostface Call

Scream 6 trailer Gale Weathers death

Leading up to Scream 6, Gale was the only major character not to receive an iconic call from Ghostface. That will change in Scream 6, as confirmed in the trailer. Even with the threats, Gale isn't up for any type of game. Interestingly, as she's on the phone with the killer, the masked menace appears in the background and snatches someone else in the apartment. It's possible this is tricky editing, or it's possible there's more than one killer.

6 Gale Tries A Dewey Move From 2022's Scream (But It Doesn't Work)

Courteney Cox as Gale in Scream 6

Before Dewey was fatally stabbed by Ghostface, he managed to shoot the killer in the hospital during 2022's Scream. He actually walked back to finish off the job by going for the head. The decision turned out to be fatal as Ghostface attacked, killing him. As Ghostface terrorizes Gale in what looks to be her New York City apartment, she shoots through the door several times, aiming for the killer's head. However, Ghostface still dodges the shots behind the door and still manages to attack her.

5 Ghostface Seems More Powerful In Scream 6

Ghostface looking ominous in Scream 6.

While all of the past Ghostface killers are dead, including Matthew Lillard's Stu, the presence of Ghostface still seems different in Scream 6. The past characters who turned out to be Ghostface were never trained killers, and they always made mistakes, but the new killer seems to have a darker, more aggressive nature about them. Kirby even mentions that "this isn't like any other Ghostface," hinting that this will be the toughest test for the group of survivors when considering Ghostface's motivations.

4 Scream 6 Characters Will Find Themselves In Dangerous Situation

Scream VI Trailer Is Tara Ghostface

College is what drew Tara, Chad, and Mindy to New York City, but as the trailer teases, their classmates may also fall victim to Ghostface. Jack Champion, Devyn Nekoda, and Liana Liberato have all been cast in Scream 6, and it seems likely they will be the peers of the college-aged group. As seen in the trailer, Ghostface doesn't give up the chance at a good chase, even if it means forcing victims out of a high-rise apartment window or hanging from a theater balcony.

3 Sam Still Shares Similarities With Ghostface

Melissa Barrera as Sam in Scream 6

After revealing she was the daughter of an original Ghostface, it was difficult not to worry about some of the details surrounding Sam in 2022's Scream. The manner in which she killed Richie was almost identical to Ghostface's killing of Judy Hicks. Sam also wiped the knife clean in the same fashion as Ghostface. In Scream 6, Sam does a head tilt that matches Ghostface's movement. Though it could be a way to mock the killer, it will undoubtedly stir up more theories that Sam is truly a killer deep down.

2 There Could Be More Ghostface Phone Calls In Scream 6

Samara Weaving Scream 6 trailer

Other Scream 6 newcomers include Tony Revolori, Samara Weaving, and Dermot Mulroney. All three of them appear in the Scream 6 trailer, and they all have something in common: each one is holding a phone. This teases that the trio could all be victims of Ghostface's ominous calls, and maybe even one of them is the star of Scream 6's opening kill scene to follow in franchise tradition.

1 The Scream 6 Subway Teaser Gets Extended

Mindy Meeks-Martin (Jasmin Savoy Brown) attacked by Ghostface in teaser for Scream VI

Prior to the full Scream 6 trailer, a short teaser was released, showing a glimpse of the subway sequence. In it, Sam, Tara, Chad, and Josh Segarra's character are on a crowded subway train packed with riders dressed in Halloween costumes. Scream 6's subway scene is full of horror references, but more hauntingly, there are several people dressed like Ghostface. Mindy is also in the sequence, although her implied attack looks to happen when she's alone on the subway.
