The first trailer for Scream 6 revealed a couple of story points and showed how ruthless the new Ghostface will be, and it might have also given a big clue about who’s behind the Ghostface mask, all thanks to the shrine. Scream 6 is taking the survivors of the latest Ghostface murder spree out of Woodsboro, but as previous Scream movies have shown, that won’t be enough to stop the rise of a new Ghostface killer – only this time, the characters won’t count with the help of the franchise’s Final Girl, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell).

Scream 6 will see Sam (Melissa Barrera), Tara (Jenna Ortega), Mindy (Jasmin Savoy-Brown), and Chad (Mason Gooding) moving to New York City to start a new chapter, but they will still be haunted by the trauma of the latest Woodsboro murders… and by a new Ghostface killer, as well. Luckily, they will count on the help of legacy characters Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) and Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere), but this new Ghostface is a lot more brutal than previous ones and knows a bit too much about past killers and murders. Ghostface has a shrine dedicated to all those who wore the mask before them, with items that belonged to them and to their victims, and this might give a big clue about Ghostface’s identity in Scream 6.

Scream 6’s Shrine Might Point At Ghostface Being A Cop

Scream 6 easter egg and costumes

One of the most impressive moments in the Scream 6 trailer is the reveal of the new Ghostface having a shrine, where they keep the costumes of Billy, Stu, and all the killers that came after them, as well as clothes and items belonging to them, their victims, and from key settings from past movies, such as a Woodsboro High flag and the sun prop from the play at Windsor College in Scream 2. However, most (if not all) of these items could only be accessed by people working at the police, given that most of them come from crime scenes, so it could be hinting at Scream 6’s Ghostface being a cop.

If that’s the case, the question now would be who could be behind the Ghostface mask, and so far, out of all the confirmed characters, only one is a police officer: Dermot Mulroney. Mulroney’s character is shown in the trailer arriving at the shrine with Gale, Sam, Kirby, and the rest, and is then briefly shown in the middle of the mannequins wearing the Ghostface costumes while on his phone, hinting at him getting a call from the killer. However, the trailer could be giving fake clues about the potential victims or Mulroney’s character could fake an attack against him, which is not uncommon in the Scream franchise (Scream 2022’s Richie was attacked at the hospital, and Scream 3’s Roman faked his death).

Who Could Be Scream 6’s Ghostface?

Like in every other movie in the Scream franchise before their release, everyone is a suspect and there could be a big twist when revealing the identity of the Ghostface killer(s), but there are a couple of details in the trailer that have raised suspicions. It’s being widely theorized that Sam will be the new Ghostface, following the steps of her father, Billy, and this might be supported by how she tilts her head in the trailer. Another character believed to be Scream 6’s Ghostface is Tony Revolori’s Gabe, who is briefly seen in the trailer wearing a shirt that references Dario Argento’s Four Flies on Grey Velvet, which could be a big clue about what his story will be like. Scream 6’s first trailer did a great job at showing the basis of the story and sparking debate on who will be the new killer, but without revealing too much.
