Though a newcomer to the franchise, Scream 6 star Dermot Mulroney reveals his character has a surprising Ghostface connection. Mulroney is one of multiple new faces appearing in the upcoming horror sequel alongside Ready or Not stars Samara Weaving and Henry Czerny, Spider-Man: No Way Home's Tony Revolori, Devyn Nekoda, Liana Liberato and Josh Segarra. Scream 6 will also see the returns of recent and longtime franchise vets Melissa Barrera, Mason Gooding, Jenna Ortega, Jasmin Savoy Brown and Courteney Cox.

Plot details for Scream 6 are currently unknown, though the film is said to follow the survivors of the various Ghostface killings as they leave Woodsboro and head to New York City, only to once again come under attack from someone donning the iconic slasher mask. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the duo behind the horror-comedy hit Ready or Not and two of the Radio Silence filmmaking trio, are back at the helm for the horror sequel with James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick once again writing and original creator Kevin Williamson also returning to executive produce. Filming on Scream 6 began this past June and now one star is sharing an exciting tease of what to expect from his character in the film.

While speaking exclusively with Screen Rant to discuss the indie thriller Gone in the Night, Dermot Mulroney offered some insight for his work in Scream 6. The star confirmed he will be playing a cop in the horror sequel and reveals he has a surprising Ghostface connection as he loses a family member to the killer. See what Mulroney shared below:

"I see it in your background over there and, can I tell you, I just watched Scream 4 and 5 to prepare for my role in Scream 6 and they're great movies, it's so fun. [Chuckles] I'm really thrilled to throw down with this great cast, much of the same lead cast from Scream 2022, they're making another one right away, thrilled to join up and we're shooting as we speak. Yeah, I play a cop, so finally they're asking me to play cops here and there, this is one of them. I guess I shouldn't say that my daughter is one of the victims, but I don't have to describe how or in what way, so that's what draws me into the story is strong family ties."

Mulroney's casting for Scream 6 marked the first new franchise actor confirmed for the sequel with reports having indicated he would be playing a cop, as he confirmed above. His role as a police officer in the film also marks a major new step for the series as he becomes the first major new officer character following the deaths of both David Arquette's Dewey and Marley Shelton's Judy Hicks in this year's Scream. Mulroney's tease that his daughter is a victim of Ghostface in Scream 6 is sure to catch the attention of many franchise fans as they begin speculating who may be playing his daughter within the film.

Given the franchise is well-known for keeping its secrets under lock and key and fake-outs in both its scripts and marketing, Mulroney's surprising Ghostface connection in Scream 6 could ultimately prove to be another misdirection or a hint at an emotional face-off between his character and the killer. With law enforcement having an unlucky streak in the Scream franchise, though, it will be interesting to see whether Mulroney will survive his encounter in the upcoming sequel or if he too will fall under Ghostface's blade. Only time will tell when Scream 6 hits theaters on March 31, 2023.
