Scream 6 star Dermot Mulroney opens up about how his character, Detective Bailey, honors David Arquette's franchise legacy character following his death in Scream 5. More than 25 years after Wes Craven's first Scream movie, Ghostface is set to return to haunt a new group of victims as Scream 6 shifts from Woodsboro, California to New York City. Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega will return as Sam and Tara Carpenter, two sisters at the center of a whole new round of horrifying Ghostface murders.

In a recent interview with Parade, one of Scream 6's newest additions, Mulroney, offers some interesting details on his mysterious new character. Mulroney shared how the role of Detective Bailey was particularly enticing for him as he feels the character pays tribute to one of the Scream franchise's most heartbreaking losses, Arquette's Sheriff Dewey Riley. Mulroney opened up about following Arquette's footsteps by playing a cop within the beloved slasher series. Check out Mulroney's full quote below:

"The thing that I liked best about being a policeman in Scream VI is that I could follow in the footsteps of the great David Arquette playing Dewey for so many beloved films of the franchise. To be genuine, it’s a great legacy to continue playing a cop in the Scream series. I was thrilled to be added to this franchise at this time, especially when the movies are taking a turn for the gorier, more thrilling action, and more intense emotional connections between the characters."

Scream 5’s Major Character Death Could Spell Trouble For Another Legacy Character

Gale points her gun up while speaking to Ghostface in Scream 6

After rising through the police ranks across the past four Scream films, Scream 5 saw Ghostface finally catch up to the former sheriff of Woodsboro, as Dewey was brutally murdered during a heartbreaking moment of self-sacrifice. While Scream 5 hinted a major legacy character could die, Dewey's death was still shocking since he was an original character in 1996's Scream. With Scream 5 upping the stakes and proving that no one is safe, another Scream legacy character could likely die in Scream 6.

Following the news that the Scream franchise's original final girl, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), will not return in Scream 6, speculation has suggested that this new installment will shift its focus onto Courteney Cox's Gale Weathers. With the Scream 6 trailer already teasing a particularly nerve-wracking encounter between Gale and Ghostface, there is some anxiety that Gale could be Scream 6's big legacy character casualty. As a counterargument, Cox also found herself as a popular choice for who will be behind Ghostface's mask this time, similar to Mulroney whose new character has raised particular suspicions.

While every new Scream movie brings a new lineup of victims, it also presents a new lineup of suspects. Mulroney's connection to Arquette's much-loved legacy character is heartwarming, although it could equally serve as a clever misdirect to present Detective Bailey as innocent. With just under two weeks to go until Ghostface makes his return to screens in Scream 6, there isn't long to go until Detective Bailey's real motives are unveiled.
