The new final girl of 2022's Scream, Melissa Barerra, has weighed in on the future of the franchise and her hopes of returning to Sam Carpenter in a potential Scream 6The fifth and latest installment in the long-running, meta-slasher franchise saw the return to the small town of Woodsboro after over ten years, as Ghostface returns to once again stalk and kill the town's residents. Barerra stars as Samantha Carpenter, who returns to her hometown after someone close to her is attacked, putting her right in the center of the insane killing spree.

Alongside Barerra, series staples, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette all return as Sidney Prescott, Gale Weathers, and Dewey Riley, respectively, as they return to Woodsboro to help out this new cast of potential victims. With large homages and references to the rest of the franchise, Scream also sees the return of iconic locations, such as the house of a previous killer, Stu Macher, and Woodsboro High. The film was released on January 14 and is currently having an extremely successful run in theaters worldwide.

In an interview with THR, Barerra was asked about various portions of her acting career, including her well-received role in Scream and any potential of her reprising her role in future sequels. The star expressed her strong enthusiasm about returning to the franchise, complimenting both of her directors, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, for creating such a positive atmosphere on set, as well as her various co-stars, who she hopes to star alongside once again. Throughout the rest of the interview, Barerra comments on some of her previous projects and the future of her career. Read her comments below upon being asked about returning:

A hundred percent. There’s nothing I would rather do, especially if I get to go back with Jenna, Mason and Jasmin, who are the other survivors. I would also work for Matt and Tyler until the end of time. I would do anything with them. They did such a good job with this and they created such an incredible environment to shoot this movie. The environment that Wes created kept Courteney, David and Neve coming back, and I think Matt and Tyler have done their best to try and replicate that experience for everyone. They’ve done a really good job.

Even with the still recent release of the latest installment, many reports have been consistently informing audiences of not only the director's hopes of continuing the franchise after the 2022 film but also screenwriter, Kevin Williamson, as well as the original cast, including Neve Campbell. Furthermore, Williamson had previously stated that he believed the studio should immediately greenlight and announce the sequels of the film, confident in Scream's ability to perform. Previously, many members of the crew have complimented the work and atmosphere on set, making them eager to work with each other once again.

With so many of the cast and crew of the 2022 film consistently eager to continue the franchise after the latest installment, audiences can rest assured that studios are at the very least heavily considering more films with these characters. Furthermore, with the last film bringing back and introducing so many fan-favorite characters, many potential stories have suddenly been created, even with the original, Sidney Prescott. Audiences can currently catch Scream in theaters worldwide.
