Warning: spoilers ahead for Scream 6.

Scream 6’s killer reveal has continued the reboot’s weirdest mystery, sparking theories about possibilities for a sequel. The Scream franchise is experiencing a surge in popularity and the new films continue the trend of teasing who the next Ghostface could be. Scream 6’s marketing embraced the mystery by releasing a tongue-in-cheek poster displaying the cast as potential killers in the style of the game Guess Who. Whereas the original four movies focused on connections to Sidney Prescott, the reboot franchise focuses on Sam and Tara Carpenter, with an unsolved mystery at the core.

The Scream franchise started in 1996 under the helm of horror movie mastermind Wes Craven and was acclaimed for revitalizing the slasher genre, while also satirizing its many clichés. Scream 5 rebooted the franchise in 2022, following new characters, albeit with most of the original cast returning as support. Scream 6 continues to bring attention to modern horror tropes in film by building a narrative around the new characters and their murky family origins.

Scream 6 introduces new twists to the franchise, such as taking place in New York instead of Woodsboro, and for the first time, the audience sees two Ghostface killers wiping their knives in unison, alongside a third killer, Detective Bailey, as the architect behind the bloodshed. The Scream 6 ending reveals a twist to Ghostface that continues a franchise tradition. Quinn and Ethan are the children of Detective Bailey, whose murderous plan is to seek vengeance for the death of his son, Richie. Scream 6 continues the trend of Scream killers being connected by family members, but does not confirm who the Baileys’ mother is or what happened to her.

While 2022’s Scream reboot established the killers’ motives were based on a deep obsession with the in-universe Stab! franchise within the movie, Scream 6 reaffirms a connection to bloodline alliance as the killer’s motive. Because Scream 6 does not introduce the Baileys' mother, this continues a trend already present in the Scream reboot movies, which have previously always left one parent of each new main character a mystery. The Baileys' mother is just the latest example, and her identity might secretly have another, as-yet-unseen Scream bloodline connection.

Scream's Reboot Keeps Leaving The Core Four's Parents A Mystery

Scream 6 sam and tara

Sam is haunted by her father being Woodsboro’s first Ghostface slasher, Billy Loomis, the man who initiated this legacy of murder. What the Scream reboot has not revealed yet is who Sam & Tara's mom is, or Tara's dad. The reboot has also hidden who Chad and Mindy's dad is, other than revealing his last name is Martin. Some may consider the Core Four’s family as unimportant, yet the Scream reboot movies bring attention to Sam and Tara’s mom by questioning her whereabouts, while also emphasizing that Chad and Mindy’s uncle is Scream 2 victim Randy Meeks.

One of the Scream reboot’s themes is honoring legacy, yet the full legacies of these characters remain a mystery. The reboot pays tribute to the original Scream films by centering the murderer’s motives around family, but Scream 6 also enriches the narrative and mystery by acknowledging that the story has yet to reveal every character’s origins. The self-deemed Core Four may be close and tied together by their survival, but what haunts them is their family’s legacy in Woodsboro.
