The Scream 6 trailer teases a franchise first for Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox), who has missed out on this Scream staple, despite being the only character to now appear in all six movies. Following the death of her ex-husband Dewey (David Arquette) in 2022's Scream and the sudden absence of horror icon Sidney Prescott (due to actress Neve Campbell declining to return for Scream 6), Gale Weathers is now the only remaining legacy character in the soft-rebooted franchise. As hinted in the Scream 6 trailer, Gale will continue to have an essential role — for at least part of the film.

The Scream 6 trailer shows Gale as a part of a group of Ghostface survivors that also includes new protagonists Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera) and her sister Tara (Jenna Ortega), as well as Scream 4 survivor Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere). The group seems to find a shrine to all the previous Ghostface attacks, indicating that Ghostface has long become a sort of mythological figure in the public imagination by this point. However, a later moment in the trailer shows a franchise first for Gale.

Though it may be somewhat hard to believe, the Scream 6 trailer shows the first time Gale Weathers receives a menacing call from Ghostface — with the phone call being one of the more iconic recurring traits of the serial killer. The reason why Gale hasn't yet received a call is likely due to the previous Scream films typically focusing Ghostface's attention onto Sidney. However, now that Sidney is nowhere to be seen, with Neve Campbell's absence from the movie, Gale Weathers is now the target of Ghosftface's creepy call.

Just like how the initial teaser hinted at the death of Mindy Meeks-Martin (Jasmin Savoy Brown), this moment also suggests that Gale might become a victim of Ghostface, as the trailer scene ends with the killer pouncing on her. However, as the same fate was hinted at for Gale in the Scream 4 trailer, this hint towards her death should be taken with a grain of salt. Nonetheless, whatever Scream 6 has in store for Gale, she does achieve a franchise first in the film.

Why Scream 6 Feels Like Gale's Legacy Movie

In many ways, 2022's Scream was the legacy film for Dewey Riley (David Arquette), who went on one last adventure before getting brutally killed by Ghostface. Scream 6 now seems to be positioning Gale Weathers in the same direction, as promised by her franchise first phone call. However, it remains to be seen if Scream 6 will also include Gale Weather's death.

A possible hint towards Gale's fate in the film is the fact that Courtney Cox was one of the first actors to wrap filming of Scream 6 in the summer of 2022 (via MovieWeb). No matter how big her role in Scream 6 turns out to be, it is apparent that Gale Weathers will have her meatiest role in the film. This is quite the evolution from the arrogant tabloid news reporter introduced in the first film.
