WARNING! This article contains SPOILERS for Scream 6!

Scream 6 includes a post-credits scene that further connects Mindy Meeks-Martin to her uncle, Randy Meeks. When Scream returned in 2022 for its game-changing requel, Randy's story continued, despite his death in 1997's Scream 2. 2022's Scream 5 brought back Randy's sister, Martha Meeks, and introduced her daughter Mindy. Randy's death solidified the Scream films as rule-breakers in the horror film genre. Randy was a horror film buff, much like his niece is in the new films, which initially made him look like the perfect candidate for Ghostface, as his knowledge of slasher films could help him.

Randy was innocent, but his extensive knowledge of the horror genre could not save him in the film's sequel. As Mindy points out, Scream 6 follows a similar Scream 2 plot. The story brings its characters out of Woodboro and to college in New York City, upping the film's scale and giving Ghostface countless alleyways, subways, and bodegas to hide in. While Ghostface always seems to be one step ahead of the protagonists in Scream 6, Mindy is ready to fight back with her friends, prepared with a long rule list that includes a special post-credits rule.

Scream 6's Credits Scene Poked Fun At Randy & Mindy's Rules

Scream is undeniably meta, which sets it apart from other slasher films. In the first film, Randy urged his friends to follow his rules if they wanted to make it through the night alive. Randy's rules poked fun at the horror movie final girl trope, saying only those viewed as pure survive. In Scream 6, Mindy gathers her friends to list her own rules, which claim legacy characters no longer matter and the killer can be anyone. However, since Scream never follows these rules, Scream 6 adds a post-credits scene to prove just how meta the franchise is.

Post-credits scenes became popular in more recent years and were not widely used when Scream premiered in 1996. Marvel films are known for having such scenes, but Scream 6 mocks the new post-credits obsession with a clip of Mindy insisting, "not every movie needs a post-credit scene." The scene is comical because it proves once again how willing Scream is to break its own rules. Mindy believes movies do not need post-credit scenes, so the Scream 6 ending adds one just to prove her wrong and mock the rule list she is so confident in.

Why Scream 6's Credits Scene Was So Important

scream 6 clues

The Scream franchise does not care about the rules for horror films because it will always create its own rule book to keep audiences in suspense. Scream 6 presents many firsts. It is the first film set in a big city, the first without Dewey Riley, who died in the previous Scream film, and the first without Sidney Prescott as Neve Campbell.

However, Scream 6 is also the first Scream film to have a post-credits scene. What is particularly fun about the scene is that it does not offer any new information or suggest that the story will continue. Scream horror movies always close the story out before the credits roll, even if the franchise has plans to continue. Instead, the Scream 6 post-credits is a meta scene for fans of the franchise to enjoy, while also poking fun at Mindy and Randy's horror film rule lists that never actually apply to the Scream films.
