The Scream 6 trailer, showcasing the latest installment of the Scream franchise, has dropped, which seems to already be fulfilling a bloody promise made by the movie's marketing hype. The Scream 6 trailer demonstrates the filmmakers' commitment to making the newest movie the bloodiest and goriest of the series yet. One scene featured in the trailer seems to specifically illustrate how serious Scream 6 is taking this promise.

Following the surprise success of 2022's soft-reboot Scream, filmmakers pledged another installment that would be even bloodier and more brutal. Moving the tale of terror out of the original Woodsboro locale, the rebooted Scream series seems to be abandoning the franchise's established rules, which the killer has famously upheld up to this point. What's more, as Courtney Cox is the only remaining original cast member, many are wondering if even Cox's Gale Weathers will survive Scream 6. In a bold decision, much of the Scream 6 trailer lingers on one violent scene from the movie, involving a calamitously bloody sequence set in a bodega.

Scream 6's Bodega Scene Confirms How Bloody Scream 6 Will Be

Unlike previous entries in the Scream franchise — wherein Ghostface would dispatch one or two victims at a time, stalking and isolating them when possible — Scream 6's Ghostface tackles a shop full of people head-on. The killer has seemingly retired the slow-and-steady method in favor of a more fast-paced action movie style-brutality, paying little mind to potential onlookers. The killer also brandishes a shotgun, using it to execute the shopkeeper — a franchise first. While previous Ghostfaces have used firearms, it typically only occurs after their identity is revealed — such as with Billy and Stu in Scream and Mrs. Loomis in Scream 3.

Scream 6's departure from Ghostface's typical behavior ramps up the movie's potential for violence and cruel indifference to human life — akin to Art the Clown of The Terrifier series. Ghostface is now willingly increasing the sphere of victims beyond those predetermined to now include bystanders also. The bodega scene's sheer violence and brutality in the trailer are quite shocking compared to the slasher series' standards up to this point, providing the Scream franchise with a new kind of horror. Ghostface has seemingly evolved beyond the skulking assassin into a flagrantly bombastic, modern serial killer. As Ghostface says during the trailer, "I'm something different." The killer's evolution is even observable in Ghostface's mask, which is weathered and battered, as if it has aged and matured, unlike the pristine Ghostface masks of the past.

Why Scream 6 Looks So Much Darker Than Previous Movies

Aside from Scream 6's uptick in brutal violence, as depicted in the bodega scene, the movie is also setting a precedent by missing Scream’s main protagonist, Sidney Prescott. The Scream 6 trailer marks another franchise first by handing the iconic phone call from Ghostface to Gale Weathers, likely due to Prescott's sudden absence. Likewise, another stark difference between Scream 6 and its predecessors is the apparent lack of humor. Despite the serial killer premise, previous Scream movies have always been littered with moments of black comedy and genre meta-humor. With the humor seemingly toned down (at least in the trailer), this new interpretation of the Ghostface killer is primed to take the franchise to bloodier heights in Scream 6.
