Scream 5 trailer release is confirmed for tomorrow. A Nightmare on Elm Street mastermind Wes Craven famously returned to the slasher genre with 1996's Scream, putting a meta-spin on the horror tropes he helped create. The genre-deconstructing movie was a huge success and launched a whole franchise whose last entry Scream 4 came in 2011.

Now ten years after the last movie in the series, Scream is returning to the big screen for a reboot bringing back original cast members Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette along with a new generation of actors. All those returning cast members were indeed featured in a recent release of first look images, which came along with a new poster teasing the reboot's Ghostface. Scream 2022 also got a new Ghostface emoji in celebration of the famed horror franchise's return to screens.

It's no surprise that plot details about Scream 5 are being kept under tight wraps by all involved. It has however been teased by new cast member Melissa Barrera that fans "ain't ready" for the reboot and what it has to offer. Of course, original Scream helmer Craven passed away in 2015, and the directorial reins have been handed off to Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. But though Craven may have been physically absent, original movie cast member Arquette said the late director's energy could very much be felt as the film was shooting.

Scream is obviously a franchise that has a lot of nostalgia value for fans of 1990s and 2000s horror. It's also true that the whole Scream gimmick of delivering slasher thrills while simultaneously taking apart the genre had become tired by the time Scream 4 came around. Obviously rebooting Scream offers a built-in angle as the film can now deconstruct horror reboots the same way it once took apart slasher movies in general. It remains to be seen though if the Scream approach to meta-horror still carries any water in today's world, where the internet allows everyone to become a critic, and well-schooled fans are far more conscious of various genre tropes than they were in the relatively innocent days of 1996. The fact that Scream 5 lacks the directorial guidance of the master Craven is also a matter of some concern for fans hoping the latest franchise entry can regain the magic of the originals. It is however helpful that three of the main original Scream cast members are still around to provide the sense of a legacy being carried on.
