Scream 2022 officially gets R-rating for "strong bloody violence, language throughout and some sexual references," in line with its predecessors. The latest installment in the iconic horror franchise picks up 25 years after the events of the first film as the quiet town of Woodsboro is once again rocked by a series of murders from someone donning the Ghostface mask. This time, the killer is targeting a group of teenagers with ties to the town's deadly past and the secrets kept within it.

Scream will see the return of franchise vets David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Roger L. Jackson and Marley Shelton while also including series newcomers Melissa Barrera, Mason Gooding, Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, Mikey Madison, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Dylan Minnette and Kyle Gallner. Development on the film has been in the works since 2011's Scream 4, though would ultimately land in limbo following original director Wes Craven's death in 2015. Scream would get back in the works in late 2019 as Spyglass Media Group acquired the rights for a new film to relaunch the franchise while still serving as a sequel to the previous installment with Ready or Not duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett at the helm.

With just over a month remaining until the film's release, Bloody Disgusting has confirmed that Scream 2022 has received an R-rating. The horror sequel has been given this rating from the MPA for "Strong bloody violence, language throughout and some sexual references." This R-rating officially keeps the entire Scream franchise under the adult rating.

Ghostface in Scream 2022

It may not come as much of a surprise that Scream 2022 has received an R-rating, given the previous installments in the franchise, though it should come as an exciting relief for fans to know no punches were pulled for the new film. With the Ready or Not duo at the helm of the film, the R-rating also promises plenty of exciting kills for fans of the franchise and horror genre. As the two also reunite with the 2019 hit's co-writer and producer for the script of Scream 2022, one can also hope that the R-rating will lead to more of the same dark sense of humor seen in both the original Scream films and Ready or Not.

Though nothing has been confirmed as of writing, the announcement of Scream 2022 receiving an R-rating from the MPA could indicate tickets going on sale for the film soon. With ticket sales announcements also generally comes a new trailer for films, creating the potential for audiences to be given more clues or fake-outs for the new film while early sales figures could give the studio a good idea of viewer interest in the sequel that could lead to future follow-ups. Whichever the case is, the wait for Scream is nearly over as the film is set to hit theaters on January 14, 2022.
