A new photo from the set of the upcoming Scream 5 teases the return of the famed Ghostface serial killer. Fans of the franchise have been waiting and hoping for quite some time now that a return to the twenty-four-year-old series would happen, despite the loss of Wes Craven.
Craven passed away in 2015, at the age of 76, just three years after making his final film, Scream 4. For many fans, the fourth installment of the famed horror series was a welcome return to form, with original Scream writer Kevin Williamson making his return after sitting out on Scream 3. For some fans, however, the fourth installment in the series failed to reach the heights set by the first film or the second and ended up being a disappointment. Ultimately, the film’s meager box office tally proved that even with the reunion of Craven and Williams, things just weren’t as good as they could’ve been. Thankfully, a fifth Scream entry is on its way, this time with directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett giving the series a new direction, while reportedly honoring Craven.
There hasn’t been much in the way of set photos from Scream 5, despite production having been underway since September of this year. This hasn’t lessened fans’ excitement in any way, however, and now, a new set photo from the official Scream Twitter account teases the return of Ghostface. The photo comes just in time for Halloween, with the now-iconic killer’s favored hunting knife stuck into a Jack-o-lantern carved in the killer’s likeness. The pumpkin also appears to be sitting in the sort of chair typically reserved for filmmakers or actors on set. The accompanying text reads: “Giving the [knife] a little test. #HappyHalloween.” The full Tweet can be seen below:
The knife is sure to get a rigorous workout in the upcoming film, which features the return of original cast members such as Courteney Cox, David Arquette, and long-time holdout Neve Campbell. Exactly what sort of plot has been cooked up for the return of Ghostface is currently unknown, but during a recent interview with Roger L Jackson—the voice of the ever-changing killer—Ghostface was referenced in such a way that confirmed the likelihood of more than one killer. This shouldn’t come as a surprise to Scream fans, though—introducing more than one killer into the mix has become a sort of horror tradition within the franchise. As for the film’s release date, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has meant that the initially hoped for 2021 release date is now currently set for January 2022.
It will definitely be interesting to see what direction the Scream franchise heads now that the directorial torch has been passed on to someone other than Craven. There’s no denying that the late filmmaker was one of the greatest horror filmmakers of all time, but after four entries in the series, getting some fresh talent to tackle Scream 5 should make for an all-new perspective, while still keeping things recognizable to fans.
